Opeth or Edge of Sanity?

I'd have to disagree on that statement. The first EoS album was pretty much straight-up death, yes. But with the second album (Unorthodox - 1992), they had already started to "stray away" from "normal" death metal.

I've just checked Unorthodox out and yes, you're absolutely correct. I'd forgotten how brilliant this album is.

they could be a lot less alike. i don't get why so many people have such a problem comparing bands. i mean, they're playing (largely) the same instruments, similar genres, just very different takes on the style.

that said, regardless of the fact that I'd take EoS' less technical style over Opeth most of the time, I love every Opeth album (aside from GR which I haven't properly heard yet) very much!

yeah its the individual taste of course. but the concept of this thread is stupid since the bands are nothing alike really

Well, if you could read, you would know from my responses that I wasn't really asking a poll so much as bringing what I consider a bit of an injustice to peoples' attention, that Opeth is considered a pioneer in metal while EoS is ignored. Perhaps you should consider that subtlety is not dead as an art.

you'll find that as in real life, the majority of people don't read, they just type.

inclined to agree with tchocky - EoS' progressive elements didn't flower until a bit later, but Opeth arrived fully formed with Orchid.

AMEN TO YA BRUDDA

Yeah it was around '95 with Orchid, and '96 with Crimson and Morningrise that prog death was really flowering I think. I also think it's important to recognise Brave Murder Day ('96) as an important album. While it was not strictly prog, I reckon there are strong prog elements, and they also really started the mix of doom and death (correct me if I'm wrong).

I think that nothing has been better since those two years.
