Sorry if I overlooked some thread that dealt with that already, but...

How do you see the press nowadays? As an important information source? A catastrophe-fed-moloch? Or a double-edged sword?

Whenever I see some coverage about some attack, war whatever the first question is (in german TV, news) "Are there Germans involved, wounded, dead?" "What consequences does that have on Germany?" This kind of report sickens me... Do you know how many people are ethnically cleansed away day by day in Africa? Surely not, since noone gets to hear about it. Who cares if 10,000 people die in Burundi? Only 500,000+ dead sell good on the media market! And the info on latest ascapade of some glamour star, just caught after ferocious chase by reporters is a million worth more, so strike that report about hunger-dead in X! We are already directed by the media to concern less for some people. Maybe CNN is less bad than others, at least I see there reports I would never be able to see on German news. But still, it's cut pretty short and with the question after influences on USA it might have...

Today, you don't win an electio by good offers, but by the money you have to broadcast your election show.

The only thing I consider interesting about TV for example are some scientific shows, about history, astronomy, physics and such.

I think the world would be better if the media not existed... The only things I trust in nowadays is good old books, and myself.

For an example, how can you be really really sure of that the americans (from USA) really did land on the moon? During that time, there was a scientific competition between USA and Russia, so USA could simply have faked it all, making them win the "battle"... Media could easily have arranged that scene, it looks no more different than a science-fiction movie from that time...

C'mon! This might sicken you, but this thing sells like anything else!
The whole point of news is making it "local" so that people will get
interested! The more local it is the more personal it is, and people
buy what is personal to them, right? Don't tell me it's not important
to a lot of people to know which country the different bands they
listen to come from? Just an example...

I love the media! hehe... I've studied media, and would love to
continue with it. One day I might even work with journalism )
That would be cool )

But yeah, I don't like all the hunting for news and making things
up just to have something to broadcast or write about... Sometimes
the media goes too far. We're all human, we like making things
bigger than they are.

Just recently we had a case where a serious programme on TV
indicated that a lot of drugs were being ordered for the Norwegians
who competed in the Olympic Games we had here in '94. This caused
quite some chaos over here you can imagine, and after a couple of
days evidence was put forward that the programme was wrong, and
they had the wrong druglists! lol. They did ONE error! They looked
for sources that supported what they had in question: "Did the
Norwegians take drugs before the Olympic Games?" Instead they
should have searched for sources that went against their question.

I don't really mind them hunting for something to report if there's nothing more important. MY problem with the media is the sensationalism, blowing a lot of things out of proportion... and also how nosy they are. I know it's kinda what they're supposed to do, but when (at least in the US) they tell a politician that "the people have a right to know" I just want to punch them and say "no they don't." GAH! man, that get's me worked up... I've lost many a nights of sleep because my mind strayed on that subject. man.

Ziu@ the reason that they tell you about this is because it's only important for Germans to know this. It has consequences for people like parents of german soldiers or something... when a german died it's not impotant for English people because nobody in England know these german people. In England they tell only how much englisch people have died. I am sure that german parents of soldiers will watch every day the news for this reason...
