Origin review

i dont find myself bothered by him.in fact his vocals are a very nice addition to the music imo. but yeah he should focus on mid and low range too.

@karps: it is f*cking awesome, and i cant wait to hear more of him in AoS

If I've understood Zephyrus correctly, it's the musical shift Borknagar has experienced since the joining of Mr. V that's a problem. At least that's the way it is for me. It just doesn't have the same feel to it, and could just as easily have been called Vintersorg - Origin. It's more of a Vintersorg (the band) record.

Don't get me wrong, I love Vintersorg, both the music and the vocals. But I also love Borknagar, and I'd rather have one of each than two of the former.

I really don't see the connection. Sure the two projects share the same vocalist, but musically I see very distinct differences. Trying to compare the latest Vintersorg albums to Borknagar's is pretty hard in my opinion, especially with Origin, it's unlike anything either band has done.

I think of it as parallel evolution, Oystein is also a very progressive thinker musically & intellectually like Vintersorg, so it is no surprise that the two of them write similarly. There's still a distinct difference between the two though, I think Borknagar is much more stern while Vintersorg is more... magical. That sounds lame but I can't think of a better word for it.

yeah. vintersorgs trippier, at least the last two albums were. and the viking heritage imo was much more pronounced.

A short review of origin in our Highlights section, in the proper context of course :) http://www.metalact.com/highlight/3_en
Comments are welcome, either here or on the site.

I don't usually comment on reviews, as they are subjective in nature, but I'm going to adress one issue here:

it is a statement of the band: they do not want to go back, but they themselves aren’t sure where exactly they’re heading.

This is just uninformed and wrong. You are in no position to make assumptions like that, mainly because Borknagar have announced many times over the years that we would make an acoustic album when the time was right and ripe. This album was not made with any intention as to show where Borknagars music is going, the intention was more along the way of showing where Borknagar has been, where have you been?
The melodies has always been there, so to imply that there is an 'excessive use of melodies' just goes to show that you truly do not know Borknagar's music at all.

This could be like what Opeth did with Damnation and Deliverance. We got the soft album, and soon will come the brutality!

Jesus Tyr! You found a lot!

Hehe, thats a rare combination ;)

Yeah, I do routine searches, and I've done that since the promos for Origin where distributed (early september) ;)
They're not all good reviews, a few bad here and there, and a few of them are in other languages than english.

I was expecting that, given that it's a forum for fans of the band.
Why do you take everything so literally, do you expect reviews to be stiff pieces of writing repeated over and over again on the net? Not my cup of tea. I did not write this as a fan of the band as a whole, nor do I know every statement they make. I wrote it as someone who would have enjoyed a more complex acoustic album done perhaps with Vortex as vocal. Call me an idealist for being disappointed by an album which just clearly doesn't have the geniality touch as (in my opinion, subjective of course) The archaic course does. Nothing ripe here. Need I repeat the word 'subjective' again? That's how I tend to be when it comes to bands that I like.
And to answer your question, as their path lead them towards Epic, I was further and further away.

In the same material, exactly in the beginning, you'll find the following:

As are all laws that govern the partitioning of metalheads into two camps: ultra-pro and hyper-con, it’s open for discussion.
