Over compressed sounding git fiddles

At work so I don't have a clip but I had a real quick question regarding the sweet spot between crunch and heavily distorted tones. Say you guys are going to be mixing a hardcore or metalcore kinda band that demands high gain but still needs crunchy definition, do you look to your eq more or your gain knob to get the job done?

It seems like if I ever nail the perfect amount of gain the guitars end up sounding fizzy and scratchy and eq isn't going to inject dynamics. Perhaps it will uncover some dynamics a little better but I can never do that and be completely happy about the final sound. But if I turn to my gain knob and level it a little low so that things like breakdowns and chords come across really nice they end up sounding sticky and disruptive everywhere else. ESPECIALLY if the guitarist isn't nailing everything 100% it can cause hiccups and it's just terrible.

Suggestions?

Get really acquainted with the Presence knob on the amp, it sort of acts effectively as an anti-compression tool, especially if you like to record at higher volumes. Master goes up, so should the Presence. Let me know if it works out for you.
