The only reason I could think of is that both bands are making smart music, and as Anathema still belongs more to the metalscene then the rockscene () people still mention them together...

Yeah, I know what scene they come from, but are they similar? Or is it cool to be into MDB, Opeth, Anathema, Katatonia? I just read some of Opeths lyrics, out of interest, and it seems a million miles from what Danny has been writing about. I'm scared of my conclusion to things like this. It makes me feel like an alien

why dont you just download a few tracks off the net and see for yourself, dunc? yes, lyrically, opeth and anathema are very much different.
but just like you said, the four band you mentioned are my favorite bands on earth. it's all about the mood and attitude, which are similar in those bands.

i dont know how else i can explain. i mean anathema, katatonia, opeth and MDB all have that sad, depressive touch to their music, right? thats what im talking about. thats why most opeth listeners like katatonia or MDB or anathema...

i like anathema, but i don't like that much of mdb except the % album, katatonia bores me, and opeth irritates me and gets me nervous. i'm not saying they're bad bands, but i can't see no link between 'blackwater park' or 'tonight's decision' and let's say 'alternative 4'
. it's like saying 'sleepy hollow' and a tv report about nervous breakdowns have the same feeling

well, i don't think that wheather Anathema, Katatonia nor MDB have much in comon in these days. I mean, from the genre and especially from the feeling and atmosphere. MDB and Anathema were put into the same corner in the past: doom. Anathema left, Mdb is still doom. Even in those days they had little in common with the points i mentioned above. Maybe its only the genre the bands are put in, or the past which makes people compare them with each other. I can't say anything about Opeth for i haven't heard enough of them, i just can compare the other 3 ones. I like MDB and Katatonia, in a different way, but none of them can compete with Anathema for myself.

you are actually looking at it the wrong way. all im talking about is the "feeling" or you could say, the "attitude." for example, monster magnet and opeth have really different feelings to them. kata., ana., MDB and opeth have that depressing touch in their music. am i wrong? thats what i get from them, personally. they are all completely different band, everything-wise, though.
yeah but it's like comparing poetry and real life. it's the same start but two totally different things.
