I just bought a 5150, and am actually amazed at how fizzy it is. How do bands such as Arch Enemy and In Flames(old) use these amps and not get this fizzy tone? Am I just turning something up that I shouldn't, or do I need some kind of mod?

I'm not sure what you mean by fizzy. I think 5150's sound kiiler out of the box. If you want help tell us what cab you're using and what your settings are and maybe we can help.

It's the 5150 combo. I'm gonna be getting the head and cab soon(the I not the II), because although i think it's fizzy, it still has one of the best tones I've ever heard. It's hard to say what I mean by fizziness, it's just that it seems to have this excess fuzz to it that I don't hear on the Arch Enemy and In Flames albums(and yeah I have tried various gain settings).

Well with those albums your hearing what the amp sounds like w/ one speaker miked from like 2 inches away and (Andy can correct here) in the case of the Arch Enemy-- mixed w/ another amp sound as well. Of course it sounds slightly different than the amp does in your house.

Obviously the recordings of the amps are gonna be different, but the sounds were different than mine when I saw Arch Enemy live, too. But now everything is resolved, as I spent a good 2 and a half hours tweaking it and now it sounds godly. Thanks for all of the advice.

Glad to hear it.... didn't mean to break your balls, but I've met more than my a fewwguys who bought equipment b/c they heard it on a record and were disapointed when their live sound wasn't "off the record." Obviously, not the case here.

Hi Exsanguis,

Am interested what settings you used in the end, it took me forever to get the 'right' tone from a 57 close miked 5150...
