Hey guys,

Sorry if this has already been brought up before, again, same thing as other peeps about the search not working. I was just curious if any of you have tried and would share your experiences of playing on a Peavey XXX head. I've heard a whole bunch of things about it and was wondering if it really was as nice an all-rounder for heavy music as it seems or if it was just old hype I'm reading about at harmony central. Was thinking about getting a tube head soon. I use clean a fair bit, and so 5150 was a bit of a no-goer from what I've heard, and mesa boogie is outside my price range. I'd spend £1000 tops.

I've been lurking on this forum for aaages, but have recently become a newbie for posting, I just have to say that all of you guys have been so utterly helpful and influential to me and many others. Recording heavy music is such a specialist field with such specialist knowledge, and I am completely grateful that Andy Sneap'n'James Murphy et al are such generous peeps to be here and share it with us.

You guys all rock.

There. I did it. I've done my arse (sneap) and ass (murphy) kissin'... :tickled: :tickled:

Yeah I think I might pop down Denmark street this coming week and try to track one down to have a go. Heard Ashdowns before at shows I've played, during soundchecks and wasn't 100% keen on what I heard, then again I haven't actually tried one though. Man, I wish Denmark Street shops were the kind of shops that would let you tweak'n'play in there for a bit longer than 5 minutes! Oh well. :Spin:

I got the XXX and it's great.
Although, it's the first head I've owned. Before I used a PODxt Pro.

One funny thing, since I modded the cable for the footswitch to be able to switch from my g-major, the g-majors output has overdriven the crunch chanel a bit and the definition is incredible :D

Can't wait to see how it all sound when I get a ts9 :)

It might be worth mentioning that bands like 4waykill and suffocation use Triple XXXs. Also the JSX is a modded Triple XXX. The noise gate has been made variable, the fat switches have been added and the EQ is now active. But it started out on the foundations of the triple XXX. Oh it also has the clean channel of the Peavey classic 50.

i just recorded a guest solo 2 days ago for the band Cannae on Prosthetic Records using a XXX and it was quite nice... added just a touch of my ts-10 (my ts-9 was stolen) and it was very cool for playing lead. i personally prefer my Framus Cobra head, but as i couldn't bring it to the session the XXX did just fine. the guitar i used was one of my Caparison Dellingers and the pick-ups were still stock as my other ones aren't back from my tech yet with their newly installed EMG's. here's a pic with me and the Cannae boys right after i finished the solo:

nice pic james, guitar looks very cool indeed :headbang:

Could you tell us a bit about the framus cobra? I've never played one in person, and just wondered how you would describe it's tone/capabilities for metal.

cheers

I tried one today at gc and was VERY impressed. It had a wonderful lead tone and sustained impressively long. I liked just about everything about it- and I think I like it more than the mesa triple rect they had there. In fact, I know I did. Methinks I may have to get me one of these. Certainly would be nicer than waiting forever for something high end.

i dig the xxx quite a bit i think it sounds GREAT for the money. and james, jason always has those things sounding killer down at audiohammer we used to play through that head all the time i liked the tones he got from it. if you like the way it sounds go for it! thats all that matters.

wow, can't figure out who's payroll you're on.. Peavey's or Jay's.. :tickled:

A quick bit of surfing leads me to believe that the Cannae was recorded by Jason Suecof from Audiohammer Studios. It looks like there's a set of Tannoy reveals in there too. Any thoughts on them James. I have a set but have never had a chance to compare them to other monitors.

The triple XXX is a good head for sure but it doesnt quite have the bite that the 5150 had soon as the 6505 is on the market the better!! Did anyone get to NAMM and manage to try one out??

the Tannoys sounded like butt.. i monitored on his HR824's, which he bought after trying mine and telling me he hated them.. that's Jay for you though... lol \m/

I've never played a Peavey or Mesa, so no comparisons here.
But Framus Cobra sounded awesome last night I played it...
It was brought by a guitarist for another band that played that night.
I played on Crunch channel with the gain all the way up and it was great for both rhythm and soloing, nice tight modern tone that cuts thru well. Too bad I didn't have time to twiddle with it a bit more, but I'm nevertheless impressed. My band tunes to E and his to D, but that didn't make his sound any less defined. To top all that, he got it brand new with matching Framus cab for mere 1200 euros. o_O
Lucky bastard... :D
