I've never heard anyone ask this about Opeth though, I get it a lot with CoF, people saying Dani must use some device to get all the sounds. They are just talented vocalists, they use their vocal chords! It is impressive and hard to believe that all these bands can pull stuff like that off sometimes though!

Mikael does use some effects on his vocals in the live setting, I know for sure on the quite parts that get distorted but not sure about the growls.

No, there were hardly any effects put on his voice. Mostly just compression and reverb I think for Bloodbath.
