Place where angels go to die.

Mikael joined a band called Opet, which he learned was taken from a book Sunbird (1972) by author Wilbur Smith. That band fell through, and somewhere along the way an H was added. Opet is the city on the moon in the book, so I guess it means "City of the Moon."

Look harder.

Where does the name Opeth come from?

[From the Official Site] The name was taken from a book by author Wilbur Smith, and was originally spelled Opet without the "h" at the end. The meaning was unknown for me until I quite recently found the book myself, and got the knowledge that Opeth is the city of the moon.

Opet was an Egyptian goddess btw ("Opet was the hippopotamus goddess and the mother of Osiris") .... in the temple of Karnak there is a temple dedicated to her. There also was a big festival of Opet ("The Beautiful Feast of Opet"), and apparantly Opet meant "secret chamber".

I always thought that Opeth came from this, but then I read the FAQ couple of months ago ... I like the Egyptian explanation better though :p
Perhaps it's worth mentioning this to the members of Opeth ;) I don't know if they know this themselves.

Thanks to those with the helpfulness.

I thought Opeth was a city where angels went to die in some weird gothy sci-fi novel. I remember reading that on the main site a long time ago, but checked again and couldn't find it... I always thought Opeth was a great name because of this, cos you know, it's a cool idea...

about Opet - I never even thought to make the connection. And some how it seems a bit shit that all they did was add an 'H' for no apparent reason... If Wilbur Smith is such a good writer the 'H' would have been there from the start.

Place where angels go to die is the topic.....My band is called Where Angels die and that spooked me a bit (someone having our name already....) You can listen to us at myspace.com/whereangelsdie if your interested.

ROFL

Ah, but the name now is better. How about Pantera? They used to be Pantego after the suburb/town they were from, but the town wouldn't let or didn't want some metal band (to) use the name, so they changed it to Pantera.

Grr .. In an episode of Metal Hammer where, close to the release of GR, when they could be bothered talking about Opeth .. They said in the '30 second expert' collumn that Opeth's name came from an Ancient lost city in Africa.. There really is no hope for some lol.
