Poll List: Best extreme + clean vocalist?

If someone burns me a CD-R of Arcane Sun, next time I choke it I'll think of you.

Or just show me where I can buy it for $10 or under.

OK so "The Chaos Path" by ARCTURUS....I've finally figured out what it is about Simen Hestnaes'/ICX Vortex's vocal style that makes him sound unique.

His clean vocals sound as if they're playing backwards.

Aaron Turner is probably my favorite clean/extreme guy right now. He's using more clean vocals, and they are pretty durn good.

Well cut my hair and spike my belt. :loco:

Can't believe Paul from Novembers Doom has yet to me mentioned. He may actually be the best at this mixed style. I'm constantly amazed how easy it is to understand almost every lyric sung his in harsh voice.

This is very true actually, Paul has a very powerful and clear voice with his clean and extreme vocals.

ha, so track #3 on their first album ("Whence and Whither Goest the Wind") has the vocals playing backwards, and you just think track #3 on all subsequent albums would have backwards vocals? :loco:

I just thought it was the fact that he's insane that makes him sound unique.

Here's my take on the old original topic, since it's kind of cool:

- Dan Swano
I might have called him #1 if you didn't have Nemtheanga at the bottom of this list. Great on both sides.

- Michael Akerfeldt
Would be near the top if his more-confident clean vocals would have existed at the same time as his awesome growl from his early days. Now the growl is just pure boring low-end, while it previously managed to combine the low death growl with the higher-pitched scream within one voice.

- Peter Tagtren
- Grutle Kjellson
Average on both sides.

- Quorthon
Dunno.

- Garm
- Simen Hestnaes
- Vintersorg
Great cleans from all of them, but unremarkable growls.

- AA Nemtheanga
Probably #1 from this list.

I'd add Mikael Stanne from Dark Tranquillity; he was already my favorite growler, and then I loved the clean vocals on Projector.

I don't even like Dark Suns much, but that guy was probably the best "switching" vocalist that I've ever seen live (I've seen Stanne, but not Swano or Nemtheanga). All while playing the drums too!

The dude from Scar Symmetry is pretty great too, because he completely rips off Swano on both the cleans and the growls.

Neil

Agreeing with: Aaron, Garm, Nemtheanga. 3 tenors of metal!!1
Mike's growls are too... clean. They're not dirty or raw enough... they sound too perfect, if anyone gets my point.

Kenny and Peter from Type O Negative.

Yeah that doesn't really count, but Peter's vampire vocals kick ass and Kenny's scream is annoyingly awesome.

People on a local forum made the claim that Phil Anselmo is the most versatile singer ever.

Vortex is quite good.

I agree, to an extent. His range isn't spectacular, but he is a very tuneful clean singer, and I still maintain he has one of the greatest screams in the history of rock n' roll.

He always reminded me of an old bluesman actually. An old, white, pissed off racist asshole of a bluesman.

Hell's Wrath (Living Through Me) still gives me a great big manboner with a giant cheeseburger on the end of it, mostly due to his vocals.
