Who here likes power metal, personally i think its a little too cheesy, some songs are alright, but id rather have someone singin bout killing people than talkin about hobbits and middle earth.... your thoughts?

not ALL power metal is about hobbits and ME.....
Knights, noble causes, good vs. evil, dragons.....
I couldn't care less really, as long as a song sounds good to my ears I'll listen to a guy singing about which pie to buy... steak or mince and cheese?

I agree, even though good lyrics are cool, the most important thing is the music.

I second your thoughts Swizzlenuts. Maybe one day the power metal crowd will grow up- but then again I dont think they want to grow up.

i also agree with Profanity- old Priest is power metal done right- as is old Queensryche. I always like Sanctuary's first album Refuge denied- cross between the priest and megadeth.

Power Metal as a genre as a whole right now is terribly bad in my opinion, what with all the copycat bands and all. However, what genre can't you say the same thing about? I can't think of any. So every genre as a whole is in bad shape in that respect...I lost what I was saying here...

Anyway, I love Power Metal. The real bands of course. Some of the most talented guitarists, singers, lyricists, drummers, bassists, keyboardists, etc., are found in Power Metal (get my point?) A vast majority of Power Metal sings about fantasy and such, but there are also many that don't.

I'll just go ahead and listen to a few highlights I enjoy in the genre, some being very obvious...

Blind Guardian, Symphony X, Helloween, Gamma Ray, Earlier Freedom Call, Lost Horizon, Newer Kamelot, and a lot of the smaller, newer bands that are coming out as well, like Seven Witches and Mystic Prophecy. Of course, there are the borderline bands such as Iced Earth, Iron Maiden, etc., and the more Progressive stuff like Star One.

I do not like power metal. I find the operatic vocals and multiple voice vocal harmonies very annoying. The only power metal band I like is Children Of Bodom; they never have those irritating multi voice vocal harmonies. I started a thread about power metal a couple months ago, in which I also explained the reasons I do not care for it.

It's great music, how is the music cheesy? You don't like Helloween's first 3 records? What's wrong with HammerFall? I don'tget it, everything from that band is good. Gamma Ray is genious, Edguy is great. What's so annoying about it? just sounds kinda like a more modern and more melodic Iron Maiden to me.

You would think that people on a respectable Metal discussion board would show a little maturity while dealing with such a subject. And I don't understand why Power Metal is 'for pussies.' Only pussies make extremely heavy riffs and are very fluent with their instruments? But really, if you don't like the genre, do it the way someone your age who is mature would do it, unless you're under the age of 13...then do it like you're someone older.

I love Power Metal. It is one of my favorite metal genres. It isn't all about hobbits, it isnt all about dungeons and dragons, and the stuff that is about it I don't mind. There are many great bands out there. Some of my favorites are Stratovarius, Grave Digger, Running Wild, Gamma Ray, Helloween, Edguy, Blind Guardian, Hammerfall, Primal Fear, Rhapsody, Dream Evil, Seven Witches, Rage and many more. I think fans of metal who are into aggressive stuff but not into operatic type power metal would like Grave Digger. They have always been on the rougher side vocal wise and make extremely heavy music. I really hope real power metal gets more recognition and can eventually get big in the states. A handful of bands have come through so far and have made an impact. Blind Guardian and Symphony X toured together and knocked alot of people off their feet. Hammerfall opened for Dio last year and turned the heads of alot of true metal fans. Primal Fear were recently a part of the Metal Gods tour featuring Amon Amarth, Carnal Forge, Pain Museum, Testament, Immortal and Halford and had a very good fan base at the shows even though that tour never really took off. Helloween is coming around this fall and you know they are pioneers of the genre and loved by many. Also every year in the USA is the annual Prog Power festival. It has sold out every year so far and sells out quicker and quicker each time. Last year it had its most star studded line up featuring the first USA appearances of Angra, Edguy, Blind Guardian and Gamma Ray. This year will mark the first USA performances of Nightwish and Rage, it also features Circle II Circle and Symphony X. I only see Prog and Power metal getting bigger as it is a huge part of metals future.
