Preferred compression pedals for guitar?

Hey ya'll. I've never bothered experimenting much at all with compressor pedals in my guitar rig, but I noticed something I liked when using my PodXT as the input into re-valver mkII. (EMG 81-7[18v] -> Maxon OD808 -> XT -> macbook/revalver live)

The only thing on in the XT was the gate, and then yeah I twiddled in a fair bit of the compression there also.. and I was like "hey! i like that!". It added some nice depth, thickening.. more character etc. It's pretty transparent too, that's pretty much the most important thing I guess.

Anyway, I want the same in a pedal. Matter of fact I assume I can do better than the pod compressor with a pedal. Is the Boss compressor/sustainer good?
What else is out there?

In a live environment, though, I can see it being really useful, especially for leads and clean stuff

Like others I only use it on clean sounds before the amp, but I use the red MXR Dynacomp. Very simple pedal (2 knobs + switch) and it has warmer sound than the Boss.
