Price on this violin

Hey guys!

My lady is out in Montana right now. She was driving through on her way to Yellowtone and happened to pass this Auction.

At this auction they had one of the original Huckelberry Fin books, the original Polaroid camera and a lot of other awesome treasure.

Anyways, she came past this Violin. Nobody had bid on it, so she placed a $50 dollar bid just for shits.

She ended up winning it!! The violin was listed as a mid 1800's Jacob Stainer violin, in mint condition.

So she took it with here and checked it out a little more, and it turns out it was actually made in 1728!!

Just curious as to what something like that would be worth? I looked it up and didn't find much, so I figured you guys might have access to what it's worth. Not really expecting it to be worth thousands, but We're still definitely curious!

just did a quick search. the guy died in 1683. so the date might be wrong. But his Violins have sold for up to 75,000 euro's.

It the date is on a label inside the violin body, dont take it as the date it was built. Several copy cat builders did this in the 1900's and up. dont know why. Fuckers.

Seriously man, just take it somewhere and have it appraised. Even if someone here is an expert (which is unlikely) no one is going to be able to tell you anything based on a phone pic and labels are notoriously misleading.

Don't get your hopes up about the 75.000 euros It's pretty much undoubtedly a copy, but it can still be a nice instrument. I've heard a genuine Stradivarius, but in the hands of the girl who played it, it could've been any half decent violin and I couldn't have told the difference Best take it evaluated to someone who knows his shit.

Maybe it's just the picture, but it looks far from mint condition?

It may be that the violin is Capio di Jacob Stainer 1728
I.E... copy of a 1728 stainer. Take it to a proper bowed string specialist.

If by some freak chance it is the real thing then you hit jackpot.

If not then if it's a half nice old violin it'll probably be worth a bit

Take it to an expert, but whatever you do, don't take the first offer you get even if it seems like a really good one. If the first appraisal is high enough to make it worthwhile then get it valued by a variety of different people.
