Tarquin, yeah ill fly them an email today!

Just for everyone to see, this is the response from the Focusrite Team that i pulled from a thread on Gearslutz.:

"The XLR input feeds the mic preamp in the Pro 40 and the Jack input feeds a line level amplifier therefore if you use the jack line input on the Pro 40, you will be bypassing the mic preamp.

Im pretty suprised if thats true why its not common information given out by Focusrite...many people have been asking about the same thing on forums and never really got a straight answer from what ive seen. Interesting!

Aye, it should be part of the answer-base.

another little tid-bit that i picked up:

the line-amps can both attenuate and amplify, so when you've a cable plugged into the jack-socket, bypassing the actual mic pre, and you set the gain knob to "0", its actually about 10db down. the real "unity gain" is at about 3 or 4 on the knob.

I see, from what ive read the people using external pre's have been using them with the Saffires gain on 0 so it looks like they have been using it under unity gain as you say.

I think ive made my decision on which one im gonna go for and its looking like the Profire, the possibility of PT is still on the cards at a later stage and it seems more expandable in the future.

curiously, I have firepods now, but would love to have an upgrade where quality is very important.....like vocals and guitars.

Is it possible to mix, say, 1 saffire 40 and 1 firepod...run them both into the same DAW?

if you're on OS X you could create an "Aggregate Device" which would combine the two under one driver, but that can have its own set of problems.

Plus the constant BSODs on Windows. I don't know why people are willing to live with that. If you're on mac though, I suppose it would be fine. I haven't tried it for more than a couple hours on mac.

Also, that's interesting that the line input is bypassing the pre. However, it's clearly going into a line-level amplifier, which is pretty much the same thing. You're going to have to boost the signal a bit to get to unity, and a line-level amp could have just as much color as a preamp.
