Well, I could make fun of you. Bring out the over protectiveness of your statement, maybe the fact you think your riffs are super amazing. Ha, BUT i'mma help you. Because...well I don't know. Just kidding man I know your concern. I needed to copyright my material a while ago as well. (my story here)
Ok, back a few years ago I was in this band. I had a few members that were really iffy but they helped with recording. Their personalities were iffy, but playing they were awesome. But they couldn't write shit. So, I was the guitarist and vocalist. But I wrote the drums, bass, guitar, lyrics, strings and piano. So I wrote the full songs. We recorded them only as instrumentals, and before I could record vocals they quit. So I said whatever right? Three months later (After I have finished versions on my myspace as me cause i re-recorded it all) the ex- guys had all my songs on a myspace.
And here's the kicker...it was my original recordings with my voice on some parts. I slapped them with a I'll sue your ass and I have those copywritten bullshit, (i didnt yet) but they caved and stopped, handedo ver the old cds i gave them and boom.
So my suggestion. GOOGLE is your friend. Look up how to copyright.
http://www.ehow.com/video_4458631_songwriting-copyright.html - says how to copyright a song in Canada (using SoCan orginazation.)
http://www.socan.ca/ - A union for musicians/composers. You can join and copyright your songs there.
Otherwise, look around man. I'm sure you can find more ways. But SOCAN is very very reliable.
