But in any case the most "punk influenciated" bands will be Motorhead and Warfare and they have never denied it. Hardcore with it's thrash mixed with punk (a la S.O.D or D.R.I. is what I meant) maybe a more punkish heir.

As for Gamma Ray is just the offspring of Helloween which in due time is a band with their influences and they (as most modern power bands) owe a lot to Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, which in time...all the way to some Neanderthal with a rock and a stick.

I think it's both ways around...When some punkbands like DRI, Discharge, Misfits, Circle Jerks, etc were influenced by metal and started playing "heavier" , they on their turn inspired metal bands to get into speed and thrash... Anyway, I loved that crossover scene of the 80's, just becouse it was all about having fun !!!
