Question to (/about) Andy('s) his kick drums

Yeah Aaron, I commonly just put a lot of shit down in front of the kick, and put the mic stand on said shit horizontally, then stick the mic stand arm straight into that hole. Although I have to admit that so far my best sounds have come from micing at the port hole. I've yet to have a great, punchy result like Kaomao posted from shoving the mic so far in.

if you put the hole high is not that difficult to get the mic close to the skin.
I have one of these mic stands

they're good for micing drums

Unless I'm just a total douche, I'm having difficulty envisioning exactly how this position is accomplished. How big of a hole is on the outer head? I'm assuming that really the only way is to have a mic stand that aligns perfectly with the height of hole, so that the horizontal arm of the stand doesn't touch the head. A couple of centimeters is quite a long ways into the kick drum, and it seems that it would be pretty tough to get a mic that far in. Am I missing something?

These days most kick drums don't have holes in the middle of the head anymore. Most of the time it's in the bottom right. Open the lugs and rotate the head so that the hole is on the top. Next question? :)

Thanks for the thread guys, VERY helpful! Thanks for sharing your tips & EQ, Kaomao: You've helped me achieve what I've been after for quite a while... scooping that 120 was a BIG help.

Anyone got any tips on how Andy EQ's his toms?

Well, judging from Doomsday machine, I'd say Andy really controls the 120 to 200 area of the toms, and boosts the sub-lows on them. The highs are bright as hell too, so possibly a generous high shelf, complemented with a boost anywhere from 8 to 10k? Just assumptions on my part though. I've been trying to emulate the tom sound for a while, and that sort of approach gets me ballpark.

I made this thread with the possibility to get flamed :)...but after a long thought I'm happy I did it..hihi

I have no clue on Doomsday toms, I normally scoop between 200 (hi toms) to 400 on the low toms...

I was worng about the mid I cut, I checked my eq and here it is
Kick_EQ.JPG

Actually I cut at 391hz and 835hz, sorry
and as you can see I boosted at 4.5Khz and 5.9Khz.
8Khz gives you more clarity, but 6Khz gives you more "splash" I don't know if you know what I mean.
I always loved the "...and justice for all" kick, that's what I like to hear in a kick, I think Andy nail that sound in a very good way.

+1

I've been using a Beta52 on kick since I started... I'm buying a D6 tomorrow... I've heard too much good come from that mic.

Give the Beta91 a shot in conjunction with your Beta52. By itself the Beta91 doesn't sound so good, but it is the only kick mic that I've used that gives you an insane amount of attack without eq.

I actually just snagged an SM91 from e-bay, they don't make 'em anymore but apparently they sound better than the Beta91. I'll let you guys know.
