Ok, I bought "The Odyssey" about two months ago but really haven't sat down and gave it a serious listen until 2 days ago. Good god this cd is kicking my ass.

I really like on how songs like "Odyssey" they really tell a story with their music which is very hard to do.

Now that I have "The Odyssey" under my belt, what album should I get next and explain why.

I'll shoot from the hip here.... I'd go with either V, Divine Wings, or Damnation Game.

Get V if you are really into the song "The Odyssey". Great flow and expansive cd. One hour long with lots of interludes and segues to keep the cd flowing smoothly. No narration ;)

Get Divine Wings if you want to have something that has not only some great straight ahead tunes but one more huge epic number.

Get Damnation Game game if you want to be different. It's not a lot of people's first choice, but the material is strong and quite melodic.

p.s. you can get all of them at www.symphonyx.com ;) Shameless plug, I know.

Why is my fav album Twilight in Olympus never get mentioned :(

V is great to get into "The Odyssey" thats right.

The meaning of V is about good and evil, is that right ? also something with atlantis but I understood the twilighted cover pic as "good & evil"
Divine is about (roughly said) destroying and recreating, also good & evil

the song "The Divine Wings of Tragedy" -> V -> The song "The Odyssey"
thats the sequence

I hope I am right :)

A lot of people have some sort of order in which they rate Divine Wings through to The Odyssey. I do not. All four are superb albums and I love them equally, although the stylings are obviously different in each. They are among my favourite albums ever, in fact they probably are my favourite albums ever.

My advice therefore would be to get V and if you like what you hear, work backwards through their studio releases (get Live On The Edge of Forever after Divine Wings - it's absolutely brilliant).

While I like The Damnation Game a lot, and it does have many spectacular tracks, it still feels like a warmup to Divine Wings to me. The self-titled album however, is a bit different. It has Rod Tyler performing the vocals and his style is completely unlike Russell Allen's (I personally dislike Tyler's vocals. A lot). I think MJR has said (even on the interview on the special ed) that ST was a kind of demo cd. The musicianship is as good as ever, but if things like slightly lower quality production bother you, or if you find it hard to get into an album where the vocals are not to your taste, then the album may not be for you.

Anyway, I think: Odyssey -> V -> Twilight in Olympus -> Divine Wings of Tragedy -> Live On The Edge of Forever -> Damnation Game ( -> Self-titled)

If you've purchased all of those, you're probably a massive fan of symx, so you should also get MJR's Dark Chapter (particularly if you're into neoclassical shred) and Star One - Space Metal which features Russell Allen.

Through the Looking Glass owns Church of the Machine :)

But you got those two badass tracks (TtLG being my personal favorite)

Compare that to Divine Wings where every track I think is better than the majority of Twilight (ie. Smoke and Mirriors, The Relic, Dragons Den). Don't get me wrong, I love them all, but come on, Divine Wings offers an unfaltering barrage of badassiness like no other. Every cd is badass but not quite as much as Divine Wings. Come on, you get The Accolade (tied as being my fav), Divine Wings of Tragedy (the original epic!), and Candlelight Fantasia (arguably one of the most kickass slow tunes).

V has Rediscovery, Egypt, and Communion and the Oracle, 3 out of 12 tracks. Other than that, I didn't think much of the other tracks were up to standard Symphony X quality. Yes they're decent, but Symphony X decent? In my opinion, not quite.

But yeah, lol order all cds at the same time. You won't be disappointed.

And Through the Looking Ass and Orion the Hunter are owning them mutual

Orion the Hunter is one (with evolution, wicked, king of terrors, of sins and medusa) of the most kick ass songs from SX

Bah, V is so over-rated. WAAY too over-rated. Get Divine Wings of Tragedy. You'll probably like that better.

I would agree with your last 2 sentences, but not with your first. While I think "Divine Wings" would be much easier to like immediately, I definitely think "V" is their best album to date. And that statement is tremendously difficult to make as "Divine" was my favorite for so long. But, if it had to be surpassed, what better album to do it? :)
