Quick thoughts on 2013 releases so far...

:yow:

I've checked out most of the discs on Glenn's list. Disperse might yet find a place in my heart. It's definitely a disc that requires multiple listens to digest. The CIIC might also be a winner. I also found the descriptions of Eternal Tears of Sorrow and VooDoo Circle intriguing. But the rest of it just isn't what's interesting me these days.

You realize I'm giving you shit, right?

@Labrekk: To answer your questions...

1. I'm not the world's biggest Saxon fan. My tastes lean more towards the heavier power and the prog side. Thus, I lose interest quite fast with the "classic" bands these days.

2. I liked the Tainted Nation from what I checked out after you post, but don't love it. It suffers from that damn down-tuned (yeah..relatively speaking) guitar tone that I hate (same with the CIIC disc).

3. I did hear the Snakecharmer and it was just ok. I need either a bit more blues or a bit more firepower to go with it. This middle of the road stuff doesn't do it for me.

4. I haven't heard the Audrey yet..will check it out as soon as I get a chance.

5. I liked Shakra, but I have to really enjoy a band/genre to listen to the same disc for 5 releases in a row.

6. Helker was great. I wished the hooks were a tad bigger, but that's just me being picky.

Any love for the new Omnium Gatherum? I know growled vocals don't go over so well with dome of the forum, but 1) Solution .45 hopefully broke down a few barriers and 2) there are some interesting AOR and melodic tinges to the album, even more so than their past work. I know it's only February, but it will take a monstrous release to dethrone Omnium Gatherum for my album of the year.

Not my absolute favorite song on the album (that would be "White Palace"), but "Who Could Say" will probably be the most appealing to people who aren't specifically into melodeath:

Now Voodoo Circle on the other hand....

Looking forward to getting my copy of Voodoo Circle. I'm surprised you didn't like the new PC69.........or are you just saying that it didn't have the fire power. I agree it's not as heavy as Thunderdome, but the PC69 melodies are there. I think is sounds fresh. Either that or I'm liking the mellower side of PC69 more as I get older:guh:

Did you hear one of my faves of 2013 so far? Which is Audrey Horne-Youngblood. Classic rock-style with a modern edge.

Audrey Horne = Excellent!

I don't mind the down-tuning of the guitars. Check out that last Audrey Horne disc, you won't get that problem.

You're right that the Snakecharmer disc would be much better with heavier guitars and more crunch. But as it is, it's still a good album, but not a great one.

Yes, Shakra releases similar albums, but they have the talent to write catchy riffs and killer choruses, so I'm still in.

I think most songs of the Helker discs are catchy with good choruses.

Any Mike Patton fans check out the new Tomahawk? I think it's incredible. Top 5 year-end worthy if you ask me!

FWIW... after one listen, I was ready to pass on it. It just wasn't what I was expecting. However, after giving it another shot, it just all began to click for me.

Hoping this will happen to me, too. I thought the preview of 'Leave No Cross Unturned' was GREAT and it had me really, really excited to check out the album, but overall I just think it's a boring record. Definitely doesn't grab me like the last few have.

I haven't heard much of anything new this year, but aside from the Darkthrone, most of what I've heard is really great stuff. Magic Circle's debut is finally out and as expected, crushes every modern doom metal band. New Galdr is good. New Portal RULES, same for Sacriphyx. Need to get hold of the new Krypts, too. Honestly, the one that's gotten the most play from me, and this is a huge surprise, is the new Shai Hulud. Monster of an album.

Exactly what happened to me. I heard that first track (when they released it to promo the disc), which is the final track on the disc. I spent that whole first listen expecting to hear a CD that was similar to that single. In essence, I spent that whole first listen waiting for the disc to be something it wasn't. When I revisited, with refreshed expectations, the disc totally worked for me.

I pretty much hate Doom, but I'll check this out, just to be thorough.

New Galdr is good.
I'll add it to the list.

I don't get the whole Portal thing. Honestly, it just sounds like noise to me. However, I find that when bands are praised so highly, the way Portal is praised, my intrigue level gets rekindled and I revisit the band. But honestly, I just don't hear what everyone else hears and I expect repeated listens won't change that fact.

Pass. Similarly, this sort of muddy Death Metal just isn't my thing.

I read the review on Sputnik, and was totally psyched to hear this. I want to say I might have made it through half a song before deciding it wasn't for me and moving on. I might revisit at some point, but I think it's just more of a style thing.

Compare Readman's vocals on both discs and I think you will understand the difference in the passion I hear.

I really like the new PC69, even if it is more AOR this time around, but you are not wrong here. Readman KILLS it on the new Voodoo Circle. Somewhere Jorn is hearing that shit and saying "Damn, that dude sounds like David Coverdale!"

I liked Portal in small doses up until I saw their live set. That was the game-changer for me. They aren't a band I can just put on, sit back with a few beers, and enjoy, that's for sure. Almost always requires headphones and complete darkness. They are not for everyone, but I'm very glad that they are for me.

I've heard as much from others.

Completely understood. I would say I 90% of the more extreme music I listen to, I listen to on headphones and often in a dark room.

What about S.U.N??? The new band from Brian Tichy and Sass Jordan!!! Unapologetic American bluesy Hard Rock!!! Pretty good stuff!!!
