FWIW... after one listen, I was ready to pass on it. It just wasn't what I was expecting. However, after giving it another shot, it just all began to click for me.Can't wait to check this out.

I've checked out most of the discs on Glenn's list. Disperse might yet find a place in my heart. It's definitely a disc that requires multiple listens to digest. The CIIC might also be a winner. I also found the descriptions of Eternal Tears of Sorrow and VooDoo Circle intriguing. But the rest of it just isn't what's interesting me these days.
I should like it but I was disappointed with PC69. No fire on that record IMO.
+1
Now Voodoo Circle on the other hand....
Either that or I'm liking the mellower side of PC69 more as I get older
@Labrekk: To answer your questions...
1. I'm not the world's biggest Saxon fan. My tastes lean more towards the heavier power and the prog side. Thus, I lose interest quite fast with the "classic" bands these days.
2. I liked the Tainted Nation from what I checked out after you post, but don't love it. It suffers from that damn down-tuned (yeah..relatively speaking) guitar tone that I hate (same with the CIIC disc).
3. I did hear the Snakecharmer and it was just ok. I need either a bit more blues or a bit more firepower to go with it. This middle of the road stuff doesn't do it for me.
4. I haven't heard the Audrey yet..will check it out as soon as I get a chance.
5. I liked Shakra, but I have to really enjoy a band/genre to listen to the same disc for 5 releases in a row.
6. Helker was great. I wished the hooks were a tad bigger, but that's just me being picky.

I found many of these bands because of you folks on this forum, so thank you! Some stand-outs for me so far
Shakra - Powerplay- picked this up based on a vid that Labrekk posted on this forum (thanks!).

Exactly what happened to me. I heard that first track (when they released it to promo the disc), which is the final track on the disc. I spent that whole first listen expecting to hear a CD that was similar to that single. In essence, I spent that whole first listen waiting for the disc to be something it wasn't. When I revisited, with refreshed expectations, the disc totally worked for me.Hoping this will happen to me, too. I thought the preview of 'Leave No Cross Unturned' was GREAT and it had me really, really excited to check out the album, but overall I just think it's a boring record. Definitely doesn't grab me like the last few have.
I pretty much hate Doom, but I'll check this out, just to be thorough.Magic Circle's debut is finally out and as expected, crushes every modern doom metal band.
I'll add it to the list.New Galdr is good.
I don't get the whole Portal thing. Honestly, it just sounds like noise to me. However, I find that when bands are praised so highly, the way Portal is praised, my intrigue level gets rekindled and I revisit the band. But honestly, I just don't hear what everyone else hears and I expect repeated listens won't change that fact.New Portal RULES, same for Sacriphyx.
Pass. Similarly, this sort of muddy Death Metal just isn't my thing.Need to get hold of the new Krypts, too.
I read the review on Sputnik, and was totally psyched to hear this. I want to say I might have made it through half a song before deciding it wasn't for me and moving on. I might revisit at some point, but I think it's just more of a style thing.Honestly, the one that's gotten the most play from me, and this is a huge surprise, is the new Shai Hulud. Monster of an album.
Compare Readman's vocals on both discs and I think you will understand the difference in the passion I hear.

I've heard as much from others.I liked Portal in small doses up until I saw their live set. That was the game-changer for me.
Completely understood. I would say I 90% of the more extreme music I listen to, I listen to on headphones and often in a dark room. They aren't a band I can just put on, sit back with a few beers, and enjoy, that's for sure. Almost always requires headphones and complete darkness. They are not for everyone, but I'm very glad that they are for me.
