Hey fellow ND fans, I'm new here but i've been a fan for quite some time now, and you guys all seem like very laid back nice people. Anyway, I hate to actually have to ask considering I've tabbed just about every other ND song that I enjoy (just finished twilight innocence, beautiful song)but I can't for the life of me figure out Rain. Now if any of you guys could help me out a bit that would be great, but i'm having a lot of trouble finding that lead part in the intro(it's kind of hard to hear), and the main verse riff. I would love to be able to play this song because i love playing along to my favorite bands, and I'm trying to finish up TNR tab wise. Thanks guys. :worship:

Ok I can try to help you a bit here, I've never bothered to tab this out so I'm doing this from memory basically....

During the intro, the bass and rhythm guitars are just chugging that open E string (tuned down as we are to A sharp/B-Flat). Underneath that chugging, I play the chiming "lead" part, which are basically like suspended chords. I'll tab out each chord, which gets strummed out numerous times, I'm not gonna type all of that out lol, I'm sure you can figure out where the changes are...

e--0----------0---------0---------0--------1--------0---------1--------3--------
b--6----------0---------6---------0--------1--------6---------1--------5--------
g--7----------5---------7---------5--------3--------7---------3--------5--------
d--7----------7---------7---------7--------3--------7---------3--------5--------
a--x----------x---------x---------x--------x---------x---------x--------x--------
e--x----------x---------x---------x--------x---------x---------x--------x-------- (dead stop)

The verse, beginning with the lyric "Becoming one with madness...", goes something like this....

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------3---3-----------------------------------------------3---3-------
---2----------------------3---3-----2------------------2----------------------3---3----2--
---2----------------------1---1-----2------------------2----------------------1---1----2--
---2-----2-2-2-2-2------------------2---2-2-2-2-------2-----2-2-2-2-2-----------------2--

"..............Becoming........one with madness..............a chaos.......to embrace......................"

Continuing with the rest of the verse below....

Ok, continuing the verse section.....

(Note-- make sure you have this page maximized in your browser otherwise the tab looks all screwy!)

e-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
b-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
g------------------------------3---3--------------------------------------------
d--3--2--0--2------------------3---3-----2------------------2------------------
a--3--2--0--2------------------1---1-----2------------------2------------------
e--3--2--0--2-2-2-2-2-2------------------2---2-2-2-2-------2-----2-2-2-2-2---

"..................Stuggling for my sanity ..........................the skies have turned to..."

e--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
b--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
g----------------------5----------------------------------------------------------
d-------------------5-----5-------------------------------------------------------
a-----0----------3-----------3----------------------------------------------------
e-----0-----0~3----------------3-------------------------------------------------

"....grey........................................"

Then this whole verse riff repeats itself for the next two lines, until the "chorus" section.

And here's the riff for the chorus section, not sure if you've figured this out already but it's tricky to pick out clearly on the album so here it is....

e---------0----------0---------0--------0---------0------------------------------
b-----------0----------0---------0--------0---------0----------------------------
g---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
d---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
a----2-----------4---------5---------7--------8----------------------------------
e----2-----------4---------5---------7--------8----------------------------------

e---------0----------0---------0--------0---------0------------------------------
b-----------0----------0---------0--------0---------0----------------------------
g---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
d---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
a----2-----------4---------5---------7--------8----------------------------------
e----2-----------4---------5---------7--------8----------------------------------

"raaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiin...................."

e---------0----------0---------0--------0---------0------------------------------
b-----------0----------0---------0--------0---------0----------------------------
g---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
d---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
a----2-----------4---------5---------7--------8----------------------------------
e----2-----------4---------5---------7--------8----------------------------------

e---------0----------0-----------------------------------------------------------
b-----------0----------0---------------------------------------------------------
g-----------------------------------6--6-6---6-6-6-6----------------------------
d-----------------------------------6--6-6---6-6-6-6----------------------------
a----2-----------4---------5--------4--4-4---4-4-4-4----------------------------
e----2-----------4---------5-----------------------------------------------------

It plays this basically for both choruses in the song, after the second chorus before it goes into the bridge "breakdown" (I hate that term) section, there's a short three chord transition that goes-

e-------------------------------------------
b-------------------------------------------
g----6---------6------------------------------
d----6---------6---------3---------------------
a----4---------5---------3---------------------
e.------------------------3-------------------

and then into the bridge with the "Noone to save me..." lyric, etc......

Oh while I'm messing with this, I had someone ask me a while back about the clean section in "Rain".....I guess alot of people have mistaken the chiming weird "Doors-y" part as being some kind of keyboard/synth thing, but in fact it's a Stratocaster with single coils, set to the neck/middle position, with some chorus/reverb/delay effects thrown on it, and the actual notes for it are as follows...

e-----15-----------14----------14----------12---------------------
b-----17-----------17----------15----------12---------------------
g-----16-----------16----------16----------12---------------------
d------------------------------------------------------------------
a------------------------------------------------------------------
e------------------------------------------------------------------

The clean rhythm guitar and the bass that are playing underneath the chimey riff goes like this....

e--------------------------------------------------------------------
b----------0---------0--------0---------0---------------------------
g------------0---------0--------0---------0-------------------------
d--------------------------------------------------------------------
a----------------------------------------------- 3-------------------
e-----2-----------4---------5--------0----------3-------------------

This above pattern repeats throughout the clean section....

A few things I guess I should note too for people reading this and trying to learn it....

For songs like "Rain" and most of our material, we are playing guitars that are downtuned. We tune the guitar to C, but drop the 6th (E) string down to B flat/ A sharp. The tuning is (from heaviest to lightest string)-

Bb - F - Bb - Eb - G - C

When learning songs like "Twilight Innocence" and "Leaving This", you want to use a guitar that is tuned to Standard tuning, but with your Sixth (E) string dropped down to D.

D - A - D - G - B - E

Hopefully this will further help when trying to learn our stuff because if you don't know the proper tunings it can be a bit maddening I'm sure.

Yes, we tune to drop Bb. And yeah "The Pale Haunt Departure" is in the same tuning as "Rain".

The reason for drop tuning isn't so we can "cheat" and play a bunch of one finger chords all the time, haha. It helps us to be able to form some more unique chords that would just be a ridiculous stretch of the left hand otherwise. There might be some songs on the next album where we tune to straight C, without dropping the sixth string.

yeah you can do some pretty twisted things with drop tuning for sure. those 3-fingered chords that are usually 579 (E-string, A-string, D-string) are just 557 with drop.. and you can do some twisted stuff if you've got the creativity.

Hey Larry, at least I think you're Larry, I know you weren't one of the writers for that album, at least I think you weren't, but do you know what tuning In Memories Past is in?

Actually yes I am Larry, lol, and on the contrary I did write some stuff for "The Knowing" and played on all of it :) The only albums I didn't participate in any of the writing/recording were "Amid Its Hallowed Mirth" and "Of Sculptured Ivy And Stone Flowers". Although I will appear on the bonus tracks for the re-release of OSIASF, but that's another story....

Anyhow, to answer your question, "In Memories Past" is in the usual Novembers Doom tuning, Bb-F-Bb-Eb-G-C. I don't think we used any alternate tunings from that on "The Knowing", that I recall.

And for the record, I not only helped put together that song and record it but the mellow Iommi/Santana-ish guitar solo in the middle of the song is me :)

Just to give you an idea and get you started on it, here's the main riff from "In Memories Past"....This is at the beginning of the song after the bass solo intro and the snare drum fill, when the guitars first kick in...

e-------------------------------------------------------
b-------------------------------------------------------
g-------------------------------------------------------
d-------------------------------------------------------
a--------5--------5-------3---------------------------3-
e----0---------7------7-----------5~6~5-----3---5---3-

e-------------------------------------------------------

e-------------------------------------------------------

d--------------------------------------------------
a----0---3--5--5-----0---3--5-5----6--5---3------
e----0---3--5--5-----0---3--5-5----6--5---3------

Hopefully that helps!

That helps me a lot actually I was under the impression that you played in B standard haha.

So, does that mean you tune bass to C?

I'm still kind new to the dropped tuning thing.
