XXX is a compilation release from Italian heavy metal/hard rock act Rain. Unlike many compilation releases that just gather what the artist/label considers to be their best work (or the singles), XXX stands as one of the more worthwhile releases of its kind because the songs, while all but one are already present in the group’s back catalogue, are entirely re-recorded with the group’s new line-up. XXX was released in 2011.

The group’s music sits along the borderline of traditional heavy metal and hard rock, so anyone into either style is advised to give Rain a shot. Being a compilation release anyone already into the group will know most of the tracks as only the second song Whiskey on the Route 666 is new. However although I couldn’t find line-up information for all the group’s full-lengths I know at least some of this material features a different lead vocalist, which should add to the release’s value to the existing fan.

For the newcomer XXX should serve as a great introductory package to Rain. These are classic hard rocking heavy metal songs that anyone into their classic metal should be able to appreciate. While I can’t say that as a whole the compilation commands the same level of attention throughout, this is definitely a solid package that I can feel justified to recommend both to Rain’s fanbase and to anyone looking to explore their sound for the first time, with the added bonus that if you find you really dig Rain and want to get their full-lengths, you’ll still have a compilation release that will sit just as easily on your shelf as the main discography, unlike countless compilations where all the material may be found in the same versions as on other albums. Having not heard the original songs I can’t comment on how they compare with the new versions present on XXX, but all in all this is a solid release to my ears.

(Aldo Luigi Mancusi)

"Rain Are Us" viene invece riarrangiata in chiave acustica, aquisendo carattere e peculiarità.

Per "XXX - 30 Years On The Road" i Rain hanno unito esperienza a qualità, per un prodotto che dovesse celebrarne l'intera carriera: 7,5.

Naturalmente non mancano i lenti, stile power ballad/aor quali “End Of Time” e “The Gate”. Notevole il pezzo acusti “Rain Are Us” posto in chiusura.

Celebrating thirty years of hard rock havoc and metal mayhem, Italian rockers Rain unleash XXX (or XXX: 30 Years on the Road 1980/2010 if you want the full title) upon the world in CD format and in vinyl LP format with a slightly different tracklist.

XXX is a collection of mostly solid straight ahead hard rockers which are generally uptempo and upbeat, thus providing the perfect soundtrack for good times. There is, of course, the occasional power ballad which sets a more melancholic mood, such as 'The Gate' and the acoustic version of 'Rain Are Us, both of which – while not belonging to my favorites on this album – are fine melodic tracks. I prefer the faster and edgier tracks like 'Born to Kill' (which has sort of the same drive as Rainbow classics 'Kill the King' and 'Fire Dance' and some Halford-esque shrill vocals), 'Fight the Power' and 'Energy' as well as more midtempo paced melodic rockers like 'Whiskey on the Route 666', 'Rain Revolution' and 'Only Your Dreams'. For some reason, tracks like 'Blood Sport', 'We Want R'n'R', 'In the Night' and 'Only fo rthe Rain Crew' remind me a bit Queensrÿche – mostly because the singer sounds a bit like a blend of Geoff Tate and Wolfsbane-era Blaze Bayley (and, I love Bayley's work on an album like Down Fall the Good Guys), but a track like 'Blood Sport' is also musically interesting like much of Queensrÿche's music is.

Although the tunes on this album all fall nuder the rubric of traditional hard rock and melodic metal, Rain inject some more modern elements into their music, and many tracks contain electronica elements (like electronic drum beats) and up-to-date synths. We are not talking a whole lot of that stuff – it is not industrial rock – but just enough doses to keep things fresh and interesting without straying from the conventional path of the genre.

In all, this is a very enjoyable release, which should appeal to fans of hard rock and traditional metal, with its upbeat and uplifting tracks. So, if you like good time metal-tinged hard rock 'n' roll, step into your cowboy boots, put on your leather vest, go down to your record store anf buy this album, and, when you come home, pour yourself a large whiskey, throw the CD in the stereo, crank it up and have fun rocking out.

Rain-XXX (Aural Music)

Apparently, this Italian hard rock/heavy metal band are celebrating thirty years of existence here with this compilation release.

Umm…what? I’ve never heard of these guys, and I’m pretty sure that not many of you outside Italy have seen the Rain name scattered across club and marquee boards across the country.

Regardless of this fact, the music contained here within XXX is of a surprisingly high quality, delivering on the promise of sleazy hard rock and melodic traditional metal with an obvious and apparent love for the source material. In case you were wondering, think big hair, stiff drinks and unprotected sex; of slick licks and stadium ready choruses, prancing ’round with a Sunset Strip strut.

The only aspect of these songs which lets the band down is the somewhat shoddy production value; a rough ’round the edges feel which doesn’t do their crisp song attempts enough justice. The accented English and somewhat clumsy handling of the lyrics also doesn’t do XXX any favors, but it isn’t that big a deal with Rain let loose with some echoes of old school Maiden harmony. These licks creep up now and then, as well, letting us know that Rain do indeed possess a metal heart beating within their whiskey ‘n women exterior. Across the board, all the songs here are instantly memorable and hit that traditional note in a big way. This one was a surprise, so give it a shot!

De uitermate toepasselijke titel XXX – 30 Years on the Road 1980/2010 past ook helemaal in het 'old school' plaatje.

Tredici scatenati pezzi di hard rock/heavy, nei quali si segnala l’inedito “Whiskey on the Route 666” e la versione acustica “Rain Are Us”.

Years Of The Road 1980 – 2010“ eingespielt.

7,5/10 Punkte

Erscheinen wird das Album als CD, Gatefold Vinyl und als Digitaler Download.

Anspieltipp: Whiskey On The Route 666, Born To Kill, Fight For The Power, The Gate, Rain Are Us

E invece no!
