Rainbow on DVD - BITCHIN'!!!

There's another good official TL bootleg called "BBC Radio One in Concert", a recording from 1983. Their last gig ever in UK, and a great (sad) one...

I don't consider that one bbotleg. I have it on CD on Griffin records, not on video (alas) and it's a DAMN GOOD live album :headbang: , sadly it was truly a farewell :erk:

^ The Sydney concert can be seen on an official DVD (reissue actually) simply called "The Boys Are Back in Town". Downey didn't play the drums on this one, he was temporary replaced by GILLAN drummer.

That's right, I forgot about that bit.

I'll just remaster the old versions myself...with my volume knob and graphic equalizer.

Well, it's not that the mastering is only about cranking the volume on older recordings, but sometimes it turns out it's like that. Some really old recordings can benefit from remastering, since it can remove tape hiss, crackles or whatever, and some albums are unreasonably quiet. Take Crimson Glory's s/t as an example, it peaks some 1 or 2 dB's below max level.
There are unfortunately bad extremes, such as when I heard the remastered Painkiller - it almost made me puke. Totally squashed and irritatingly "loud" sound...

Most of my older cds are that way...too quiet. I have to crank the volume up almost twice as high to get the same level that I would with new cds. While this isn't generally a hassle, it can be in situations where I'm using a multi-disc changer like my truck. I've almost blown my speakers several times because I'm cruising along jamming to some old Fastway or something, with volume set high for the quiet recording, and then the next CD comes up and nearly blows the windows out of my truck (not to mention scares the shit outta me)!

Indeed, that's why I call these releases official bootlegs, free of any overdubs yet legal.
Same for the Sydney concert, the sound is a bit rough around the edges and they cut out a few songs (that's what bugs me!), still it's worth its reasonable price. Buy it cheap if you find it ElectricWiz, otherwise you might be disappointed.

Yeah, the mastering wasn't done properly on these first CD editions (80's / early 90's) and lacked dynamics. I often find the overall sound inferior to the original vinyl version, ie on the first Judas Priest CD pressings. However the remastering process has also its own flaws sometimes, as SickBoy said.
