Raintime- Psychocromatic

The song "One Day" on their myspace isnt too bad. "Fire Ants" isnt as good though. Though I wouldnt say either of them is bad just not up to expectations at all

I just received directly from the record company's website for about 9 bucks shipped. Definately not what I was expecting. It still kinda sounds like them. Maybe they're trying to go more mainstream? Loved their 1st 2 CDs, not sure about this one. I've got to give it more spins so we'll see. I'm hoping it grows on me.

First things that needs to be mentioned: This album is a complete departure from their previous style and Purists (those who criticize bands for exploring other styles) will absolutely hate this album.

Overall 7/10
A Lot less growls than on previous releases, but that isn't a bad thing (some will disagree with that though). Riffs are less complex but still catchy.

Highlights: Fire Ants / I Want to Remember.

This album will take quite a few listens to fully appreciate it. It's too bad that some people will not give the album a chance or will be quick to criticize it.

I find this post a bit confusing. You begin the post by criticizing people for criticizing this album, and then proceed to award the disc an average score?

"7/10" CDs are a dime a dozen and (in my mind) typically aren't worth buying. So why would anyone want give an album "quite a few listens" so that once it was fully absorbed, it rises to mediocrity?

I still remember the night prior and the day of seeing them at ProgPower, I have to admit I am used to bands releasing only an album or 2 that is good then becoming crap, as it sounds here. I think I still have the shirt at my house

The whole album isn't that amazing, there are a few songs that are definitely "filler" (hence the 7 out of 10). However, there are a few songs that stand out and will surely be put on my "most listened" ipod playlist.

I criticize people who immediately say the album is bad, because there are some good songs on here and those people won't even give those songs a chance.

Here's how i usually rate cd's
7/10: usually have 2-4 really good songs, but everything else can be forgotten.
8/10: at least half of the album stands out and i can listen to it all the way through without being tempted to skip tracks
9/10: only 1-2 songs i don't thoroughly enjoy. Examples include: Pathosray-s/t and Kamelot- Black Halo
10/10: Every song is a jem!! Examples include: Mercenary-11 Dreams, Circus Maximus-Isolate, Evergrey- Recreation Day.....etc.

Another example; most of Sonata Arctica albums would receive 7-8/10 from me, because they have some really amazing songs, but rarely do i listen to an entire album at a time. Usually i skip over songs when the cd is in rotation.

The cd itself probably won't be spun in its entirety a lot, however I will constantly listen to those few songs that really stand out.

Your point is well taken. However, there's just so much music available these days, that it's hard to give everything the attention it may deserve. If you're one of those bands who exist of periphery, such as Raintime, your not going to get a lot of cycles to impress. You can't afford missteps, bad singles, unfortunate changes in direction, if you want to grab on to the limited amount of time people dedicate to exploring new releases. By way of example, I have about 20 CDs of new music sitting on my iPod that's been praised to the heavens. Am I going to try to find time to listen to that or to the new Raintime, which nearly everyone is less than impressed with? It's unfortunate for bands who may pour their heart and soul into their music, but that's the world we live in.

OK, after about 8-10 more listens completely through it has grown on me. Still some great melodies, fast paced catchy tunes, and a couple heavy ones. Not as an extreme sway from their previous ones as I thought from my first couple listens. It won't be my favorite of their releases but I see myself still listening to this frequently. What it does have that their previous ones don't is filler tracks, two on this one IMO. But for $7.99 including shipping, I'm not complaining.

Saw this at Vintage Vinyl the other day and there wasn't even a track listing on the back. The cover looked like a weird electronica type album. I need to hear some of this before I consider the purchase (even though $8.99 is cheap for a new cd).

If you like minimal guitar solos and the "clean" vocal styling's of Raintime you will like this album. You can tell they are short a band mate. But I still like it. Certainly no Flies..

It looks like some people who loved Flies aren't as into this one. Let's say I was less than bowled over with Flies myself. Might I have a better chance getting into this one? The descriptions of more clean vocals and straightforward riffs could be a good thing, as long as those ingredients are being used to build good songs with strong melodic statements.
