rare prog from early 70s

LP fever goes on...

Eloy - Oceans // A well-listened original, but after some toothbrushing it's as good as new. And what an album! My expectations were high, but this piece of art fulfills them completely. Mostly synth-driven, but these guys can really rock too. And the Atlantis-concept is adorable. My first Eloy-album, but definitely not last.

Gentle Giant - Octopus // Spotted it in the second-hand, and couldn't resist the gorgeous cover. Compared to the cd remaster, this original has some warmth only an LP can forge. A true prog masterpiece.

octopus is an amazing album indeed. gentle giant is still fairly under-appreciated i think. when a lot of bands went stale...gentle giant were making some very creative and quality stuff.

i think i am going to check ozric tentacles but i dont have much hope. the 80ties are a real bad decade for music in my book...

yea. was more or less a precursor of what was to come in the 90s. aside from being metal's greatest decade. ;) (the 80s that is)

Is there a good way to clean vinyl I just use tissue paper, it doesnt work that well, but im afraid other shit will scatch them.

no no NO, dont ever use tissue paper. no paper products of any kind...you might as well scrub it with a block of wood.

when it comes to vinyls, cds, dvds or any kind of media...always use a soft cloth rag to clean.

Hahaha i have this soft cloth thinggy that you get with glasses from now on ill use that.

Got A salty dog by Procol Harum the other day, not a bad album, better than the best of cd i listened to.

I've been listening to the two Paatos albums and I must say Timeloss is the record that reminds me what was great about 70's prog. The second album just doesn't have that spark.

well, i know what you mean. i probably prefer timeloss as well. however, i think the 2nd record is also great in its own way. its much more modern, but still has a classic feel to it. the band wanted to not seem so dated, and explore new boundaries, and i think its above par when it comes to current releases. her vocals are great...peter nylander is a new twist for them on guitar, stefans basslines were very melodic and prominent..and huxflux's drumming is superb as always. not to mention i think steven wilson did wonders for their production...a lot more depth than on timeloss, which i think helped their sound a bit as well.

if you want some more timelossish type material...and if you have a record player...get their debut single 7" record. it has a different version of "tea" on it...arguably better actually, along with another track you cant find anywhere else which is also just awesome...very vintage sounding. i beleive you can get it through www.paatos.com now, but if not...email stefan through www.mellotronen.com which is his stores' site.

I can see where you are coming from. The second record does feature excellent production and instrumentation blended with that lovely voice, but what I miss are not so much the specific sound elements that link the first record with the sound of 70's era prog, but the improv and freer forms in the composition. That said, I do need to give the second record more spins, so my opinion is subject to change.

Thanks for the additional recommendations.

yea, i certainly understand where you are coming from as well. timeloss was a winner right off the bat to me. i liked kallocain from the start too...but i thought i was to be let down a bit initially...it needed to grow on me a bit. i was expected timeloss part 2, and instead we got kallocain, so i had to get past the initial shock i think.

if you want some other good stuff from the paatos clan (assuming you arent already aware of them), check out landberk, and dungen. landberk is stefan and reine...and dungen has reine as well playing a lot of the guitars and stringed instruments.

Why does everyone think the first HP Lovecraft album is better than the second one? Is there some mass conspiracy?

Also, did the follow-on band 'Lovecraft' sound any good? I know they sounded pretty far removed from the original incarnation, but I'm still kinda interested.

so you disagree? :p

funnily enough, yes, I do disagree. It seems a pretty universal opinion that their first was more coherent, mature and just plain better, while their second effort was 'self indulgent' and 'unfocussed'. But frankly I can't really see how the first even comes close to the second. Songs like Blue Jack of Diamonds and In the Mouth of Madness are better than even 'The White Ship', which was easily the best track off their debut (although White Ship is a very good song). And their cover of 'Spin, Spin, Spin' caught my attention much more than any of the covers off HP Lovecraft I.

*shrugs*

ahh well, I guess that's subjectivism for you. I'm guessing (just a wild hypothesis really) that you're quite familiar with both LPs. So which do you find superior?

well, i actually agree with you. i just wanted to hear why you thought so. However, i dont necessarily think that the second release is more mature...but i do think it is far more ambitious, and better written overall. But i dont want to take away from either album really...i think both are quality releases.
