rare prog from early 70s

Based on this thread, and the samples on Progarchives.com, I've just ordered 4 of Van Der Graaf Generators albums. They're due to arrive next week.

If they kick half as much ass as Nektar or Camel, I'll be a happy man. :Smokin:

vdgg is definitely superior to nektar, which is good, but fairly average and standard among progressive rock bands at the time.

Akerfeldt should be mod

I finally listend to Arzachel. Do they only have one album? This shit is out there.

oh d00d, I have to disagree with the bit about vdgg being average and standard among prog bands of the day. That Banton/Jackson combo took that band to whole other levels beyond average and standard. Nektar, as much as I like the first four records, definitely qualify as average and standard, but any band that comes up with the Undercover Man and Childlike Faith in Childhood's End, not counting those silly Lighthouse Keepers, are the fuckin' cream baby.

i didnt mean it as a negative term whatsoever. merely trying to get across that nektar are definitely a tier 2 progressive rock band. Whereas id easily put VDGG in the tier 1 with the likes of Yes, ELP, genesis, king crimson, etc. i think they were that important...nektar produced some fantastic work, but arent necessarily essential for the fairweathered prog listener.

you're in for an experience. you either love VDGG or you hate them. personally, i love 'em :). the music is incredible and you won't hear anything like it from anyone else, that is almost guarenteed; the lyrics are very good, and sung with unmatched emotion by Peter Hammill.
which cds did you order?
