Reading List Thread

@somber soul: well, i wasn't even born when forrest wrote his books, i am by no means that old. :p

just out of curiosity, do you have a university job?

I do. Not a full-time job (unfortunately), but I teach this little supplementary course to English language history. Have been doing it for over four years now. Of course, I can't live on that alone, but it's my foot in the door, if you get my meaning. I did turn down an offer at a German university one year ago, since I was hoping for a job here, but it turned out I only got ranked 2nd on the big list of candidates. Another chance will open up in four years or so. Then I'll be old and grey, and they will want someone fresh!

yeah, i hear you. i decided long ago that all the waiting necessary for a career in academia was not for me (well, and i don't like teaching), but i have several friends who are going through the same ordeal as you - the state of things, in terms of opportunities for young people, is really pitiful if you're not in the UK or USA. :( good luck!

I'm with you here. I'm already too old to further my career. Opportunities missed, too little effort on my side etc. I do like teaching, though, but it can be had in different ways. But it's true that there are so little opportunities in academia (esp. with my field of research, i.e. historical linguistics). And since I wasn't prepared to go to some backwater university city at the edge of Germany, well, bad luck! :D So, really, I've given up this idea. I would like to be somehow involved in university stuff, which can be achieved through lectorates and the like, but I am not up for a full-time career anymore.

Im reading Russian Diary from Anna Politkovskaya, a Russian journalist murdered in 2006. I had only a vague idea of what Putin has been doing in Russia since his election, and I knew it was bad (the "solution" of Dubrovka and Beslan). I just didnt realise HOW bad it was. Politkovskaya was one of the very few who openly criticised Putin and his stalinistic practices. So he got rid of her. The case is still not resolved, as arent many other murders that occurred during Putins presidency.

I read that book too when it came out here, about two years ago. I would like to say some stuff but it is too hard with short words. :)

@hyena: I think everyone will be happy if you stop using only short words. :p

I just finished reading Pratchett's Mort, i think it makes it on the top of my favourite books of all time. Death is just lovely. :p

@hyena: The Czech translation came out in 2007. Id be more than interested to read more of what you think in this case. :) If you dont want to break the short-word rule here, send me an email.

@Siren: Yes, Mort is excellent! My top fave are The Truth and Wyrd Sisters.

Btw. Delirious, how are you proceeding with Murakami? I finished Afterdark, which was, again, excellent. I love the way Murakami can make Tokyo look like a living and breathing monster. Now Im about to start South of the Border, West of the Sun.

As kind of said above, I am on strike. :p

Oh god, whatever. :)

Ordered Slavoj Zizeks "Did Somebody Say Totalitarianism?" and Vaclav Belohradskys "Society of Nausea" today. Should fix me up with long words aplenty.

i am not ready to do that yet. :p but thank you for being the first to ask for it!
I'm tempted to try it as well. But i'm pretty sure i use only short words already, so it wouldn't require much effort after all.

Btw, it's annoying me to no end that i always type 'tit' instead of 'it'. I used to type the space in the wrong place when the previous word ended in a 't', but now i'm doing it without such words before. Ew!

I just got in my hands a book i had read on the plane to the swede land. Oh the deja-vu! :erk:
