Realizing I'm not a tr00 metalhead... and glad about it!

I don't dislike something just because its mainstream or not metal or anything like that. Like roflsaurus said - most of it just doesnt appeal to me. The fact that these bands/groups are coming out with such BS songs and making all kinds of money off of garbage is what is unappealing to me. Even some "metal" I can't stand. All the deathcore bands nowadays, drop tuned to K flat, bree bree-ing and that annoying "fry" scream or whatever.....just seems like poor songwriting and chuggy chuggy stuff, with barely any material or value. I'd take some old Death, Metallica, Pantera, etc over any of this "core" stuff. So I guess I'm picky even with the metal I listen to. Don't care though. And I've literally left a buddies house because of the music he was playing. :loco:

I'm still anti-mainstream because I hate everything about it, so I can agree with this. Don't let deathcore speak for the whole metalcore genre, metalcore used to be some of the best music before bands decided they wanted to appeal to a larger mainstream audience.

Good for op. I was heavy metal nazi when I was 16. Eventually I finished puberty and became less retarded (not just musically, in general).

Some of you guys just need to chill out. Music on the radio enrages you? The worst thing in your life is people listening to music you don't enjoy?

Then you’re just too angry in general. Other people have different tastes, opinions etc. Just because other people have come to different conclusions than you does not mean they are stupid, inferior or subhuman.

I read a lot of posts on this forum that are filled with so much rage that I wonder how the posters function at all in society.

End of hippy speach.

And there ain't nothing so special about metal to place it above any other genres. You think Country for instance is such talentless and mainstream puppet music making BS songs for money? Yeah, its not my bag either but tell that to Chet Atkins or the countless other bad ass Country musicians. MOST metal is absolute garbage anyways so it is hard to hold a candle to that argument. Ask a random stranger to name some good metal bands and I'm sure you'll laugh in their face, so why should you know anything about GOOD country, or pop, or rock, or punk, or what the fuck ever? Different strokes for different folks but you should realize that your shit isn't any better than anybody else's, or you're just as lame as those hot topic fags in parachute pants, combat boots, eyeliner, snakebites, gauges, and BFMV shirts. That was not really directed at anyone but just a rant based on some things I've been reading here so nobody get their vagina in a bunch. It is okay to be bothered by Justin Bieber making millions just as its okay to be bothered that there are people in the world who actually like St Anger, but don't think that genres or scenes have anything to do with it.

Oh, I can totally dig a lot of metalcore bands. It's just the "new-wave" of dissonant, chuggy, overdone, boring-core that I can't stand. One of our band members is all into this stuff and is always saying how "this is where metal is headed. this is where it's at." or "we should go heavier." and Im like "what do you mean by 'heavier'? down-tuned to hell? bree bree? dissonant crap that is just unpleasing to the ear?....NO! I dont want to conform or play what everyone else is playing just to fit in to a style or genre".

THAT'S the shit that causes fights amongst me and this guy. Where 4/5s of our band have 10-15 years band experience, and this guy has 2 years. He grew up in a different era than the rest of us. I'm all for material and delivery and meaning and memorable parts of songs/albums. Where this guy thinks that sort of stuff "all sounds the same".

Sorry, /band rant.

I can totally understand where you and midget are coming from. If I am alone, I dont listen to stuff I dont want to hear. But when one of your band members puts on some music that they know you despise, probably out of spite to piss you off, for no apparent reason, then you realize that they are truely into this stuff.....*bangs head into wall* I understand everyone has different tastes, cool, understood. But instead of playing some fucking dance/hip hop on the radio at our band practice, let's listen to some metal to get us pumped up.

What about liking music and good songs.

I like good music, im very open minded. I like all sorts of different genres. A good song will always be a great song either it is a metal song, pop etc. I think it is pretty silly to narrow it down to "im a metalhead (synthead whatever) and then every other genre suck". You'll be missing out a great deal of really good music if you will be like that.

I am so lucky that I actually had my "true" time when I was like 13 (bought ride the lightning with 7, first hypocrisy cd with 8)
and nobody else my age had a clue or opinion about music, so I had nothing to bitch about :D
Started listening to many different kinds of music later on, listening to lots of metal but writing acoustic pop stuff, too, listening
to loads of sound tracks, stuff like Tina Dico, Jan Delay (German funk/hip hop), Jamiroquai and older stuff like Led Zeppelin.

My brother for example, 3 years older, still is in his "true" phase, he still would wear long hair, but he had to cut them because
of his work, but he hates everything besides metal, has manowar posters in his room, fake skulls on his table and horns to drink
mead while listening to amon amarth-I am really ashamed from time to time :D

in respect to him though he is just listening to and being part of what he likes. All music is subjective so if he wants to do that then more power to him

it's kind of gay with long hair

Wow this thread would have been completely laughed at 5 years ago. Shows how much this forum has been diluted.

Well these days it's actually more cool to be the guy that is now too cool for metal, and listens to jazz/hip-hop most of the time but still cracks out some djent or Pantera every now and again. It's like when you're at school, as soon as you're 14 it's cool to smoke, you hit sixteen, and now all of a sudden all the cool kids are counting how many days they've gone without a cigarette just so they can crack out a desperation fag.

This is how I view it:

It seems like the more metal bands you like, the more of a "true" metal-head you are. In fact, it gets to a point where some people only listen to a specific sub-genre of metal, and anything that differs from that is considered to be worse music. The problem with that mentality is that there are only so many bands in a given sub-genre. That would mean there are some bands get noticed more simply because of their affiliation with a certain genre, regardless of whether or not they deserve it. Bottom line is, liking every single metal band (even the really shitty ones) more than any other band of a different genre simply because they are metal would make you the BIGGEST metal-head EVER!

I prefer a different, more open minded view of music. There are good and bad artists in EVERY genre. I prefer listening to the cream of the crop from every musical genre.
