Reamped through 15 different amps

I had this idea through Fragle's thread asking for reamping.
I started to post on that thread but later decided that it would be better to create a new thread, so that anybody could easily find it and participate, without hijacking Fragle's thread.

I used his DIs to reamp through most of my amps, as a test to contribute to this forum.

I didn't reamp with these amps to achieve the best tone for this song. (sorry Fragle, I know that that would be what you would like best)

I did it as a contribution for the forum so that people could hear the different character on the amps.
For this goal I just used the same Booster, Cab, Mics and approximately settings on the amps. On a scale from 0-10 I didn't change the settings more than 1 on each knob, apart from the gain and volume for obvious reasons (Marshall 1959 doesn't have the same gain as a 5150)

I used common to all reampings:

Maxon OD820 (Drive 9 o'clock not what I usually use but Marshall and Orange needed it so... , Tone-10,30 o'clock, Level-12 o'clock)
Decimator ProRackG Noise reduction
Mesa Cabinet w/ vintage 30s
Shure SM57 Mic
Neumann KMS104 Mic (I bought it recently and thought it would be a good experience since it's not commonly used at least in this forum)
BA original Neve 1073 Preamp with HP On 50Hz
HEDD A/D

Amps used:
Bogner Ecstasy 20th Anniversary
Custom Audio Amplifiers OD100+SE
Diezel Herbert
Diezel VH-4
Krank Revolution One
Marshall JMP 50 (1968)
Marshall JCM800 Zack Wylde
Marshall 1959RR Randy Rhoads
Mesa/Boogie 2-channel Pre500 Dual Rectifier Blackface (1992) (different tubes)
Mesa/Boogie 2-channel Dual Rectifier Blackface (1992)
Mesa/Boogie Triple Rectifier 3Ch.
Orange 40th Anniversary Custom Shop
Peavey 5150
EVH 5150 III
Soldano SLO-100

I left some of my amps out although it would be interesting to hear the Super Reverb :D

The average settings I used on the amps were:
Bass - 7
Mids - 4
Treble - 5
Presence - 7-8
Gain and Master to taste

Before I post the results I would be interested in knowing how would you like to have the files:

- bounced with the Drums or not?
- Mics mixed or separated?
- LP-HP filter on?
- All in a zip file (mp3) or mp3 link for each file?
- Compressor/Limiter and EQ on the Mixbus?

Here are some examples using the Diezel Herbert,
I'm not sure if I used a LP/HP filter but I'll check that later:

So let me know how you guys would like to hear the comparison.
There were already some ideas on Fragle's thread.

im one for just having raw guitar tracks of the clips eddy! and maybe a mix, but im not as fussed on the mix side of things :)

Yeah, I think just the raw solo'd guitars.

And maybe make them labelled just 'a', 'b', etc. with a text file inside for people who want to find out what file = what amp? So we're not biased just because of the name of the amp.

Hm, there's something about that amp I don't like. The 57 clip sounds much better than the KSM imo.

haven't listened to the clips so far, but let me chime in with one thing:

if you want to post the clips with some better guide drums and/or bass, shoot me a pm!
these drums were just very raw, straight out of the box and only roughly level matched. to make this thread more valuable i could send you a more refined version, and also the current bass reamp (sansamp psa-1), or just the DI, whatever you want.

First....really cool. Awesome riffs too---although I would tell whoever to rethink the drum parts.

Why not ditch that Maxon OD for a test of those amps as well? I just cant see the point of voiding the amp designers idea of an input for maxons idea. Thats too many amps to make that claim. Some, you would think, have to be able to perform without that pedal squishing the midrange. It will rob some of those amps of their depth.

i think i would like to hear "without boost" more than "in-mix w. drums". But in the end whatever you decide this is a great intiative. Really looking fwd to this. Thanks alot Eddy for setting this up!

I would definately use different settings (EQ-wise for example) but nevertheless I'd be looking forward to one Zip-file with all the different mp3s in it, I'm sure the different characters will show through and it'll definately be interesting and useful! :)

I'm back!!

I had some major problems in my computer which consumed me a lot of time, I'm still getting back to track :ill:

Don't ever force the permissions for a new user on your entire MAC System HD.
That's what I did, it just screwed everything on the computer.
After a week of browsing forums and trying to repair permissions (the first attempt to repair permissions I did, gave an error in each file and took
4 days!!!!! :OMG:

After some more attemps I had to give up and reinstall everything.

So I'm getting back to this thread.
Answer to some questions and comments:

Guitars sound good but the snare is barely audible on the full mixes.

That was mixed with the stereo drums that Fragle gave for reference
I already asked Fragle for the new versions of the drums and bass that he has.

I get your point, and is a valid one.
I only made the decision to use the maxon because some amps (Marshall 1959HW, Marshall JMP50, Marshall JCM800 Zack Wylde, Orange 40th Custom shop) wouldn't have enough gain to be used for this.
This way we can all hear how these amps not common to metal can sound.

thanks for the effort Eddy.

please drop me a line if you'd prefer this thread to be in the RMM section, wasn't sure where to put it

Thanks Lasse
I put it on the general discussion forum because I don't think that it is only about the equipment and it's not only about "Rate my mix/tone" so I think that the general discussion would be more appropriate, but I'll leave that to you, you're the boss

Eddy, how are you doing with this? Sorry to hear about your pc problems! I just had all my pci slots die on my mobo...

Here is the file:

I only bounced the first part +/- 2min of Fragle DIs, I don't think it needs more to compare. And I've shorten drastically the time to bounce all tracks :D

I used 3 combinations of mics for each amp
GTRs Left SM57+GTRs Right SM57
GTRs Left KMS104 + GTRs Right KMS104
GTRs Left KMS104 + GTRs Right SM57

All guitar reamps files were normalized to -10db (if I remember well)
And to bounce I had all faders at 0db
GTR Left1 - Pan <100
GTR Left2 - Pan <80
GTR Right1 - Pan >100
GTR Right2 - Pan >80

There was no extra processing, not even HighPass/LowPass filters, which would give more definition to the sounds.
When I recorded I had a 50Hz HP filter switched on on the preamp.

I renamed the amps: Amp 01, Amp 02, etc, as suggested here just for fun.
I'll reveal the names of the amps later on.
If someone wants to guess, go ahead :)

Keep in mind that I wasn't looking for the best sound for the tracks, just trying to have the amps at fixed settings (tolerance was 1 on a scale of 0 to 10) to listen better to their character.
The average settings I used on the amps were:
Bass - 7
Mids - 4
Treble - 5
Presence - 7-8
Gain and Master to taste

Edit:

I replaced the amp numbers by their actual model
