Hey guys, I figure some of you might be interested in this. Quadtracked, with the Savage and 5150 models from Recab 4. Great plugin, but I'm having a tough time getting it dialed to my liking.

I don't want to ruffle too many feathers since Shane seems like a really nice guy and posts on here frequently, but this was my universal experience with Recabinet 3.0 and above as far as the cabs. I tried lots of different ways to dial things in but it never clicked with me- always seemed wooly, muffled, and seemed to accentuate the flubby resonances with a couple of exceptions, which were the Orange and Krank cabs. The amp modeling in Thermionik is great though. I'd try it with some OwnHammer or Redwirez impulses.

That's been my same experience with them. I'm chalking it up to poor execution on my part, I'm sure with subtractive EQ I could make it work, I just can't find the correct frequencies.
Also, did a new version with the Psycho B model and Ownhammer + Redwirez impulses.

I think the guitar tone in your first clip sounds bad ass. Im stoked for the next set of amps to be released for Recabinet. I actually like the included cabs with theremonik where as in the past I didnt particularly like them much with different preamps.

I can't wait for 4.1 to drop either. I want to see how the Mark and two channel Recto sound.
BTW did another clip today. Quad tracked, Damage Model with Sterling + Eagle cabs. Liking this one more, but the low end isn't as kind of out of wack.

Update 4/12
Changed out the amp models for a 5150 and Serpent. Bit more high end on this one. Hopefully I got rid of the nasty 900hz cardboard area too.

Rather than making a new thread each time a get a new clip recorded, I'm just gonna keep bumping this one.

Got this done today, did some work on a drum sound and decided to do something quick. Quadtracked, edited for tightness. Damage and Serpent models. Slate Platinum samples with some EQ and compression. Bass was done ala Ermz' method with Recab providing some grit and distortion.

Slight mid cut and more high end:

5150 Sim:

update 4/15
5150 sim and Catharthis impulse

Sounds like you low-passed way too low, imo. Very dark sounding.

Really digging that snare. Makes me want to bust my Slate shit out again for once.

I hear that too guys, I haven't been able to get it brighter or less honky without killing the midrange or getting a really harsh tone. Pretty sure its user error, but I feel like I'm getting closer with each clip.

Got some updated tracks in the posts above if anyone is interested. Tried to see what I could do about opening up the top end a bit to balance out the mids a bit.

Definitely getting better but it's still there to me. Not sure if it's the guitar or the amp sim - do you have TSE X50II to try out? Have you been swapping cabinets between all these/can you load in something bog-standard like s-pres-8?

The closest I got to a solid tone in Recabinet with its own cabs involved cutting 3 db at 300 hz, boosting 4 db at 90 hz, and doing a 2-4 db shelf at 5000 hz on a separate EQ plugin. Basically something similar to the Redwirez impedance curve thing.

edit: and heavy usage of the 421/121 mics. I usually ended up doing a 72-25 mix of either of those to the 57, with the 57 high-passed pretty high so the other mic was filling out the bottom end. The 57 in Recabinet simply isn't dark enough to get the sort of bass response I want out of a metal rhythm guitar tone. The only exception to that rule was the Rectifier sim because it's so scooped already.

I have the x50 v2 demo and I messed around with that while trying to see it compares to Recab. Through the pres-8 they are fairly similar sounding, though the x50 has a little less unpleasant fizz and a mid and low frequency points that seem to be more mix ready. It weird, the x50 just sounds more polished, while I feel Recab is more amplike. Anyway, here's another Recab clip after I had messed around for a bit. It's Cartharsis s-pres 8 mixed in with I believe Cartharsis(the really fizzy high end one).

Did a Rose of Sharyn test today. Serpent Model, Redwirez Ubercab 75/V30, R121 mic. Psycho A, Redwirez Mesa cab, 57. It's a lot more present and aggressive than some of the other stuff I've been posting. I'm getting closer to a good tone.

Sounds awesome, definitely an improvement over the first few clips posted. I like the top end alot, very present but not harsh.

Ive been playing Recab 4 quite a bit lately and have made some observations of my own. I find that if I have the level or saturation knob on the bottom right of the Recab panel amp maxed or really over halfway it tends to make the tone boxy with the lead / crunch channel models, I suspect that much like in real life it saturates the virtual power tube stage more. In reality nobody records 5150s or Rectifiers with the master over half up, so this makes sense.

Also, If brightness is something that your striving to get into your guitar tone with other impulses / guitar signal chains, you can always just use a high shelf instead of a low pass filter. Maybe just make a couple of small cuts up top where you find annoying resonances.

For the longest time I thought it was gospel that you had to High and Low Pass every guitar sound, from hanging around here too much I think. But since watching the Kurt Ballou Creative Live class and hanging with one of my buddies that actually records and mixes for a living, I have gathered that this is one of those things that's an apply as needed kind of deal.

I tend to keep the saturation knob halfway, but I have noticed the same you did, it gets way boxy with it up higher. I need to try that high shelf trick, where do you usually start it? 5k? 8k?

Another thing I noticed is that the presence knob sucks out the bass and mids when it is cranked all the way up. I think it'd be more useful if it just added presence, but that just my opinion.

Did another test today. Psycho A with 121 on Redwirez Orange cab, 121. Serpent with Ubercab Tab 57. A slight bit of post EQ and multiband to control the lowend. Guitars might be too low in the mix.

I didn't bother getting the whole BigBox pack, I just bought a few individual cabs that looked interesting. With all the awesome free Impulses available, I can't say you really ever need to buy one.

Yeah man, I dont have a set thing necessarily. I just do a high shelf with a soft slope anywhere from like 6-12k and drop the volume of the band like 5-12db. Then I'll do a sweep or two up top with a narrow Q standard parametric band and suck out any really nasty resonances, sometimes its not needed though. Its funny because on paper that seems more drastic than a low pass but in practice it focuses the sound less and keeps more of that open high end. Dont get me wrong though, sometimes that low pass focus is just whats called for.

In regards to your updates. I honestly think your last two post clips sound pro and are great starting points for a mix, and really now its more about what you can do with the bass tone to fill out those guitar sounds. All the most bitching guitar tones dont exist in a vacuum.
