I am finally moving on from thrash metal and getting into death metal and power metal.

Can any of you recommend some great death and power metal albums to get me into the scenes?

Cheers

As for death metal, I can´t stand most of the vocalists, but there´s one album I really like:

Death - "Leprosy"

Power metal:
Vicious Rumors - "Soldiers Of The Night", "Digital Dictator"
Metal Church - "Metal Church", "The Dark"
Jag Panzer - "Ample Destruction"
Helstar - "Remnants Of War"
(Don´t know if the last two really qualify as power metal, but give them a try nevertherless.)

death metal:
bloodbath- ressurection through carnage
morbid angel- domination
suffocation- pierced from within
dying fetus- grotesqe impalement
impaled- mondo medicale
vader- litany
exhumed- anatomy is destiny
cryptopsy- none so vile
napalm death- harmony corruption
yyrkoon- occult medicine
nile- in their darkened shrines
malevolent creation- in cold blood
anata- dreams of death and dismay
mortal decay- forensic
spawn of possesion- cabinet

power metal:
blind guardian- nightfall in middle earth
rhapsody- rain of a thousand flames
sonata arctica- silence
kiuas- the spirit of ukko
gravedigger- excalibur
dragonforce- valley of the damned
primal fear- devils ground (more traditional than power)
edguy- the hellfire club (would this count? alot of it is very classic rock oriented, but still metal riffing)
stratovarius- elements part 2
iced earth- the blessed and the damned (2 disc)

for more reccomendations, view my cd tracker. there are very few cds in my collection i wouldnt reccomend

Interesting. I love death metal vocals for the most part, and prefer them over clean vocals. Ironically, I couldn't stand power metal vocals at first, but have since gotten used to them. Something turned me off about the constant use of multiple voice haromnies and the operatic wailing.

For powermetal try:

Angel Dust - "Bleed"
Tad Morose - "Modus Vivendi" (A must have)
Metal Church - "Blessing in Disguise" (extremely cool oldschool stuff)

These three bands don't use those super clean vocals and constant double bass like many power metal bands do. Those three releases are probably my favorite three powermetal releases.

Him being a thrash fan, I'd have thought the first bands recommended would have been Possessed, Massacra, Nocturnus, Helstar, Fates Warning, and Sanctuary.

But Blind Guardian works.

But now you have Primordial in your sig.

Alan of Primordial usual uses a half growl; kind of a clean vocal shouting. Sometimes he uses spoken word vocals. Primordial never have any multiple voice harmonies or operatic vocals, though it admittedly did take a while for Alan's vocals to grow on me. But now I really like Alan's vocals. They are very expressive, especially on songs such as The Coffin Ships or The End of Times.

I am finally moving on from thrash metal and getting into death metal and power metal.

I can help with the power metal portion, since my site is focused on the genre.

I recommend easing into the style, by starting with the heavier power metal bands. Here are my recommendations:

Brainstorm
Manticora
Iced Earth
Stormwarrior
Angel Dust
Mystic Prophecy
Symphorce
Demons & Wizards
Gamma Ray
Persuader
Blind Guardian
Iron Savior
Metalium
and others...

All these bands and others similar will be on the Metal CD Ratings site with ratings (some with full-reviews) for sure! ;)

Good luck!

I wish I was you man, being able to experience the genres beyond thrash and classic metal again.

But from a thrash background you'd wanna look at:

Death Metal:
-Vader
-Sodom
-Death (Leprosy and Spiritual Healing really)
-Deicide
-At The Gates
-Nocturnus
-Monstrosity
-Malevolent Creation
-Pestilence (early)
-Gorguts
-Also try the later death metal works of Testament if you haven't already.

Power metal:
-Persuader
-Grave Digger
-Helloween
-Manowar
-Symphony X (alright progressive, but come on)
-Hammerfall
-I guess Mystic Prophecy and Iced Earth but both seem to be pretty damn average.

And the bridge between these two: Children Of Bodom. There are many other bands, but not good to begin with.
