Recommend me some great newer metal!

Proggy in which way? I'm guessing you're looking for heavy/technical prog (as most already mentioned fit in), or are you also interested in prog/power and "softer" prog metal? For my bit I'd say Coprofago - Unorthodox Creative Criteria (Meshuggah meets Cynic/Atheist), Spiral Architect, Angra - Temple of Shadows, Scariot - Momentum Shift (thrashy! plus has the great Steve DiGiorgio), Vanden Plas - Christ.O, Ihsahn - Angl, Shadow Gallery - Room V, Pagan's Mind - Enigmatic:Calling, Ayreon - The Human Equation, Behold...The Arctopus - Nano-Nucleonic Cyborg Summoning, Communic - Visual Waves of Decay, Circus Maximus - Isolate.

Plus I have to throw in my all time favourite album (which I'm listening to right now) - Evergrey - In Search of Truth. I'm still drooling over their MB TriAxis/Peavey 50-50 tone...

Pretty much any type of prog! I do tend to lean towards the stuff that sounds similar to Evergrey though. They are one of my favorites.

Cheers.

The last Scar Symmetry ftw.

And if you talk about metal in general, not considering anything proggy/epic/theme-like, the next EYELESS (to be released before this summer i guess, and mixed by Jason Suecof) will melt people's faces off !!!

I'll second Miseration, it's a side project with Christian from Scar Symmetry and some other guitar player.

They rule!!

Oh man, can't help it...2 more recommendations:

1. Jag Panzer (hell yeah Chris Broderick). They've been flying the American power metal flag since 1981, and have a distinctly thrashier sound than the much-maligned contemporary Euro-power scene. One kickass song you should seek out is Lustfull and Free.

2. Another in this more aggressive power-metal vein is Hibria, a Brazilian band. Their album Defying the Rules may not be particularly innovative since it has a lot of throwbacks to 80s heavy metal (and JP's Painkiller hehe), but its execution is flawless. Lots of tapping and bass shredding too :kickass:.

Re: Jag Panzer, the only album I can really stand is "Thane to the Throne," a concept album based on Macbeth which rules - all the rest is just too cheesy for me :erk:

Yeah, but all metal has cheese in one way or another...
