I'm looking for something modern with an emphasis on jazz or folk, though certainly not limited to those two. No prog rock, unless it's very jazzy like the new Flower Kings album.

Uh, yeah, it's off-topic, but prog metal fans are very open-minded and listen to a wide variety of genres, ya? ;)

Ours ~ If you like "folky-rock" music, this is your band.Jimmy has one of the best voices ever.Download "Sometimes" and "Miseryhead". Excellent songs.
Porcupine Tree ~ Lightbulb sun (i know its "prog rock" but so good!:D )
Dredg ~ El Cielo (Excellent band with many different genres mixed in. These guys deserve so much more appreciation than they get.Its a shame not many people have heard of them.)
Paatos ~ Timeloss
Antimatter ~ Cool "ambient" band.

...

ugh, this is so hard. All my favorite non-metal bands are prog rock!:loco:

get Frank Gambale/Stu Hamm/Steve Smith - "Show me what you can do" which is amazing. Frank is my 3rd fav' guitar player now, he's a genius.

Pure technical, melodic and interesting jazz/fusion.

Or you can get GReg Howe - "Hyperacuity" if you want some of the besst jazz, shred and overal guitar playing i've heard.

Get Frank Gambale - Live! or Tribal Tech - Rocket Science. Perfect if you`re in the mood for some crazy fusion.

Greg Howe - Parallax
Frank Gambale - Live
Allan Holdsworth - Hard hat area
Tribal Tech - Dr. Hee
Brecker Brothers - Heavy Metal Be Bop
Rosenberg Trio - Live at the north sea jazz festvial
Pat Metheny - Bright size life
