As of late, I've been starting to feel that the music I listen to just isn't cutting it. I'm completely tired of melodic death, and black metal just bores the hell out of me. The only styles that have really kept my interest are tech death, prog metal, and jazz, but I want to hear something different. Recommend me some bands that don't fit into any category (like Arcturus, The Gathering, Bal Sagoth, whatever). I'm willing to give anything a listen. Have at it!

Check out some Classical guitarists. "El Maestro" Andres Segovia is untouchable and IMO, the greatest guitarist we've seen. Julian Bream, John Williams, and Christopher Parkening are worth checking out as well.

Also, try getting in Flamenco music. As emotionally powerful as Black/Death metal and normally better musicians technically. The technicality of these musicians alone is worth the listen, especially for those who are musicians and appreciate that aspect of the music.

Some recommendations: Paco de Lucia, Sabicas, Tomatito, Paco Pena, and my personal favorite, Moraito.

Have you already tried Atrox? Their first album isn´t that interesting, but "Contentum", "Terrestrials" and "Orgasm" feature some really interesting music and some of the most original vocals ever to be featured on a metal album - which you will probably either love or hate - (as well as very original album covers and lyrics). You can download some of their songs from each of their albums on their official website, just go directly to

www.atrox-web.com/main.php?show=samples

If you don´t already know them, you should also check out Anacrusis. They already split up about a decade ago, but they definitely were ahead of their time (especially on their final album "Screams And Whispers") and you can download all their albums + demo and live stuff from their website, which you find here:

http://apogee.whack.org/~ken/index.html

Some other metal bands you might like are Sieges Even, Watchtower, Voivod and Mekong Delta.

As for some non-metal stuff, try The Third And The Mortal. You find some sound-samples from each of their albums (which all sound more or less different from each other) as well as a full-length videoclip of their (heaviest) song "Magma" on their website. Just go directly to

http://thomasr.nvg.org/mortal.info/av.htm

There are two good progressive rock (not metal) songs (about 13 and 15 minutes) in early seventies style by a new band called Wobbler, which you can download from their website at

http://wobbler.gab.net/music/

For some samples from some interesting bands from Sweden and Finland go to

www.gjallarhorn.com/audio.html and www.gjallarhorn.com/video.html

http://hem.passagen.se/tvafisk/e/musik_andra.htm

www.varttina.com/recordings

www.cabal.se/massproduktion/garmarna/content/themusic.htm

and also try to find anything by Hedningarna (especially their album "Trä")!

If you would like to try some really impressive vocals, look for the album "Fly, Fly My Sadness" by The Bulgarian Voices "Angelite" feat. Huun-Huur-Tu & Sergey Starostin, especially the song "Legend"! You find some samples of this album, if you go to www.jaro.de/php/endex.php3 , click on "Artists", then on "The Bulgarian Voices - ANGELITE", scroll down and then click on "Fly Fly My Sadness".

Also try Dead Can Dance who have already been mentioned before. If you should like them, also check out Lisa Gerrard´s solo albums and Mila Mar´s album "Nova."

OK, I guess that´s enough.

Yeah, thanks for the recommendations so far. To answer whoever asked, I'm interested in new stuff from any style, so anything non-metal will do too. I'm checking out some of the bands listed as we speak.

How about something with female vocals minus the cheese (sinergy :yuk: )
