I thought there might've been a thread on this already but I was unable to find it. Depressing Metal from any genre I suppose, some bands I have in mind:

-My Dying Bride
-Sentenced
-Hammerfall (Ballad style for some of their songs)
-Peccatum
-Poisonblack

I guess mainly I'm looking for some good Gothic and Doom Metal bands (I havn't looked all that hard) as I've had trouble finding decent music in both genres. Death and Black Metal recommendations would be appreciated as well, maybe some stuff from Power/Heavy Metal bands.

Thorns of Ivy's cd "From Grace To Tragedy" can be depressing not only the sound but the lyrics.

Depending on what is going on in your life
Winter of Sin - "Obscure" and "Hailstorm"

Obscurcis Romancia has a very depressing sound.
the same with Draconian Order

Thergothon - Streams From The Heavens [Funeral Doom]
Skepticism - Stormcrowfleet [Funeral Doom]
Paradise Lost - Gothic [Doom Metal]
Forgotten Tomb - Songs to Leave [Doom/Black Metal]
Silencer - Death - Pierce Me [Black Metal]
I Shalt Become - Wanderings [Black Metal]
Shining - Within Deep Dark Chambers [Black Metal]

Theatre of Tragedy-Velvet Darkness They Fear,s/t. Gothic doom metal with female vocals(liv kristine) and very good growling vocals. I've heard someone describle the vocals as "beauty & the beast" which is accurate. Not as depressing as My Dying Bride but some of the guitar work is similiar.

Evoken-Embrace The Emptiness,Quietus.

Within Temptation-Enter. Gothic doom metal. Amazing female vocals by Sharon den Adel. I'm pretty sure George Oosthoek from Orphanage does all the growling vocals which sound great.

Paradise Lost-Lost Paradise

The Gathering-Always. Bart Smits growling. The bands only depressing dreamy doom/death release. 'mandylion', Anekke's debut on vocals. Mandylion is not as doomy but still has slow heavy guitars with a doom feel.

Best tracks on Always: in sickness & health, the mirror waters, gaya's dream.

Best tracks on Manylion: eleanor, strange machines, sand & mercury

Katatonia (both old & new, but I personally think Brave Murder Day and Sounds of Decay are the most depressing ones)
Novembers Doom
October Tide (especially the album Rain Without End)
Void of Silence - Human Antithesis

Agalloch
Crowbar (Sludge metal)
Rapture
Novembre
Daylight Dies (production is watery; overdone, I don't like it, but the music is great)
Opeth obviously

The Third And The Mortal - "Tears Laid In Earth" (especially the song "Death-Hymn"; gothic/doom with female vocals by Kari Rueslåtten)

np: Parissa & Ensemble Dastan - "Hedjaz (Gusheh)"
