record-a-riff thread anyone?

@bball : thanks for the contribution, the timing is a bit off in some parts though, try playing with a metronome or some midi drum track, helps a lot.

So umm... I'm confused. Do you want original riffs, or Opeth riffs? Or does anything go?

Well I'm going to answer this one since I started the thread. The original idea was to make a Opeth-riff thread, as we used to do, but let's make it a record-what-the-fuck-you-want-and-post-it-here thread.

i think a song structure would be best first....like clean-heavy-clean-bridge-solo-etc...or just someone post a first riff and see where it goes. well at least establish what genre it's going to be

I don't like this idea...never liked the idea of having a song structure before having found any riff to work with anyway. Obviously we should try to create something Opeth influenced.

i just recorded some riffs.. could be used for the create-a-song thing.. the only problem may be, it's in drop D.. anyway, here it is: http://s23.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=...K93PTN2BL7YYLQU
what do you think of the heavy sound? nevermind the clean one :P

You're using a pod aren't you? Tone is good, but I still prefer mine :P
Concerning the riff...I didn't like the clean intro at all, but the heavy part is nice. Of course everyone won't agree that the riffs are cool but we gotta start somewhere. I personnaly don't mind the drop D tuning, sounds evil its great. I'll try to find something to go along tonight.

While you guys make riffs, I'll start recording an EP this weekend for everyone to download by the end of July.

I hope I release this before Mike releases his stuff... so I can have the bragging right for using mellotron and hammond organs in a real heavy song first...

I wrote some of this shit like a year ago :erk:

nope.. i used the tube screamer in guitar suite, and amplitube. so it's all software:p anyway.. i'm still playing around trying to get as good a tone as i can...

the clean intro was made in a hurry, it can be done way better than that. whether you decide to build upon my riffs or not, thanks for sharing your thoughts :)

I would be willing to do some acoustic parts if I can get a mic soon. The only audio program I have any experience with is "Audacity." Any other good/easy ones you guys recommend? I see Moonlapse and Trey/Looking for a job (or whatever) use Cubase. Can you play back the audio and record at the same time? (i.e. to record a vocal track over the guitar part I previously recorded)

Heard good things about Cubase. I use Cooledit Pro and its pretty easy to use. You can do multi-track recording easily. My guitar teacher is usigng Soundforge and it seems to be very good too. I'd give it a try.

sure, I was just asking about the program for my own general usage. Even audacity is fine for recording simple stuff like that. Now to get the mic....

Here ya go- did this just for this thread. It turned out slightly on the crappy side I think. Especially the solo, I only spent 20 minutes recording so my not being shredoriffic and not getting to redo it a gazillion times translated into some pretty embarassing guitar work. Meh, tell me what you think anyway :)

hmm, it's just some ideas. We could use the first and third riff and go with that. Or were we trying to create song that sounds like Opeth? I have a couple riffs I was more or less saving for myself that might fit that mood better.
