Recording with 18V+ EMG's

I know EMG pickups can run up to 27V, but the biggest difference is between 9V & 18V. Does anyone have any experience on tracking guitars that are loaded this way, and if so, what effect does it have in tone (good or bad). And if anyone knows what effect this would have on the bass as well.

never done it myself, but i've heard that the guitars have more headroom this way.

Tried it once, the difference was negligible, at best. It lost a bit of the typical EMG compression, I guess, but that's part of the appeal of EMG's.

I liked the sound better with a 9v set up recorded but I do like the 18v mod live. Sorry not very scientific...but just what my ears told me when I tried it.

adding more batteries, so you're using two 9v's instead of one, thus making the emg's run on 18v's
