Hey guys, I'm new to the band and this board and was just wondering if they're religious at all? I'm hoping they're not satanists, I'm a Catholic and often get put off a band if they hate what I believe in etc.

*Breathes a sigh of relief*

Phew. Just so you all know, I'm not a Bible thumper, but I do believe in God and stuff, so y'know anti-Christian stuff dosnt agree with me :)

Dude are you the same Dog Vomit from the Kerrang boards?

Its me rustinpiss, bet ya'd never think me to be a religious guy  Anyone else from the board post here?

well they're music isn't really that non-religious or anything, hmn, still life isn't that bad, although the religious guys want to kill the bloke, so they're to blame, anywho what i mean to say is they dont sing about satan and killing christians, unless thats hidden messages///

that's a lame excuse
Why is that lame? Why listen to something for entertainment if the band trashes something that you value. I mean, I wouldn't listen to a band that had lyrics like "Fuck My Dying Bride, they fucking suck, kill everyone that likes them" etc etc

I agree, I'm a very spiritual and peaceful person, and to some extents a pseudo-christian, and that never stops me from listening to bands like Darkthrone, Dark Funeral..etc.

IMHO Music is music, its something that makes you feel something that your spirituality can't make you feel, it's getting out the aggression that you would never release in reality. If a band says satan is lord, blah blah, no matter how serious they are, I do not take it serious. And I'm not so mentally weak that I am going to blindly follow everything I hear and see, w/o tasting and experiencing something for myself.

Its stupid to listen to stuff that you dont think is right. I mean do any of you metal guys that arent christians listen to christian music? No! then he has no reason to listen to stuff that he doesnt believe that is right. I love opeths lyrics and they are my favorite band. But if they turn gay and start singing a bunch of crap then their history. But from opeths past albums you can pretty much tell that they are truly an awesome band.

Recently I had a special reason to check (just in case) whether Opeth were not, by any chance, satanists, and could find no evidence for any of that. Not that I ever doubted that. Someone actually told me, after reading the lyrics to My Arms, Your Hearse, that the guys show a strong evidence of a Christian background. So there goes.

I'm Greek orthodox (christian) and i beleive that Death Metal and All that Genre of music is simply amazing.
But I am also into Literture. Example that has put my mind to ease about subject mention in the first post.

Paradise Lost "as I die". You might want to listen to this song guys, its a great song. My favorite line is "Chosen Words Failed to Sustain". Pretty much we can all agree that he is talking about a religous book, for sake of argument we shall say the bible for now. Now he clearly means how religon is no longer effective as it was before as a Mass thing. I'm not saying that REligon is wrong (i'm a religous person), but rather people like to bend the religon for there own use. Now, a bit more to the 1800s, William Blake dedicated most of his writting talking about this, and the curruption of religon in England. His famous writting include "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell" and "Gate of Urizon".

With these two in mind, I don't think that you should determine which bands to listen to by their beleifs rather there intentions. Opeths' intentions i beleive are simply to tranqulize the person and just make the listener enjoy listening to their melodic rythms. However, Cradle of Filth, sings about Anti-christ and their intension to get more money for them. Most of the stuff that Cof write are simply bullshit that might be appealing to some people that dont really care what they say, while on the other hand Opeth wants to share an expeirence they had.

for now, this is the justification why i listen to Heavy Metal. I must Say its the Purist Form of music there is now, Untampered and relate all off us Metal heads together!

Long Live HEAVY METAL!

Cheers.

wow...a catholic metalhead...a rare species

this pretty much blows all the death metal stereotypes out of the water

Hehehe yeah.

I'm not a typical Catholic by the way, I go to Church about 2 times a year, don't read the Bible at all, don't wear crosses round my neck etc. I dont defend my religion for what its done in the past and I have no qualms admitting that some of the priests in the past have been kiddy fiddlers and beat people up for not believing in stuff. I'm not the kind of person who'd wear a "God RULES!!" t shirt, unless there was a group of about 8 of us doing it for a laugh. Also I don't go to stupid Christian youth gatherings where they sit around camp fires and sing Kum Bay Ya and play stupid games all day. You could probably say I'm not a "proper" Catholic, I just have a pretty strong relationship with God.

But when i check out bands like Thy Serpant and they have a song called "Christ Crusher" saying "KILL THE FUCKING CHRISTIANS!!!!!" it kinda makes me feel, well unwanted as a fun and uneasy listening to it. Anything wrong in that?

I agree, music is to relax a person or create an emotion. I listen to alot of classic and hard rock (I'm guessing newer Metallica is hard rock) when I'm in a "happier" mood, then alot of death metal when I'm not so happy, mostly melodic stuff like Amon Amarth, In Flames, Quo Vadis, Opeth, Death, (later) Carcass, Arch Enemy etc. I'm a big thrash fan too, Kreator, old Metallica, Megadeth, Grip Inc and some more brutal death metal like Bolt Thrower, Napalm Death and Cannibal Corpse (hey they're funny).

So basically I'm not your stereotypical person. Christian music is usually well, wank, and the concerts would probably have no life to them. If I go to a concert I go to hear some great music, not say an Our Father before it.

I mean "athiest" music dosn't bother me at all. Carcass' song Embodiment is very anti-Heaven but they're just not as bland as black metal bands I've heard who just hate everything I am.

@ Thorns of Sorrow - I hope I've cleared stuff up. I'm not the kind of person who'll listen to music and believe it. Kreator sing alot about violence but I don't go and beat people up. If I listened to a band that were Satanists, I wouldn't change my beliefs to suit them, but at the same time I wouldn't feel comfortable listening to them. Hope you understand, and realise I'm not "lame".

Anyway thanks guys! All I wanted to know, I probably wont mention religion ever again on here. I came here to talk metal, not God.
