Rhythm guitars in mixes

Get it right at the source. Do what you need to do to make it sound good but if you don't think it sounds good to start with, no amount of EQ or band-aid processing will take you where you want to go.

Impulse guitars are pretty hard to seat to start with. They don't take EQ well at all. Even with mic'ed rigs, you need to be in the ballpark with the raws, but in the digital realm it's even harder.

I usually have trouble getting the guitars to meld well in the mix when they are software amp'd guitars. There something about a real guitar amp that just makes it sit in the mix much better, I think it's because software guitar amps have some weird sort of nasally thing going on in the mid-range and it goes harmonically through almost the entire frequency range. But I have found that usually cutting the mid-range (especially 1KHz) on ITB guitars will make them sit better in the mix.
