RIP Pope John Paul II

About fucking time. All the pope updates over the last week have been annoying the living shit out of me.

Regardless of your religious position, the guy achieved more for human rights than anyone in a long time.

RIP.

One puppet removed, to be replaced by another. There's a window of opportunity for Catholicism to shift paradigms and represent the majority of the world here, but I doubt it. Religion and reality are diametrically opposed.

Inconsequential.

While I have very little time for organised religion and the office of the pope, and disagree with pretty much all of the views that Catholism espouses, I had a great deal of respect for Karol Wojtyla and the tolerance and compassion that he showed. He left some big shoes for the next guy to fill.

Later, pope-type dude.

I agree with Phloggy. Some big shoes.

However the Catholic church is probably one of the most backward organisations in the world.

While he may have done a lot to bridge gaps between the various faiths and make apologies for previous wrong-doings to them, in another hundred years or so they'll be making reparations for the result of their attitudes toward sexual health in Africa and South America.

I bet all the conspiracy theorists are out in force now... there's long been a "belief" that the next pope will infact be the anti-christ

According to some, JPII was a member of the Illuminati, the shape-changing lizard men at the centre of the plot to instigate the New World Order. Look up David Icke in Google and see what a nutcase he is.

Gorey, I saw some of those secret photos...I laughed my guts out as they were carrying th kids to the vans.

As to "progressiveness", I don't believe that religion is a popularity contest, nor a popular vote, like the prime minister or the president...BTW, I've be areligious for a hellovalong time.

Could you imagine the state of the roads if we got to vote for the road rules (in spite of half of them being fucked) ?

I reckon that this guy achieved a lot, helped a lot of forgotten people...and also as others have said, helped a lot of people get AIDS and a lot of people be born who otherwise wouldn't.

I just hope that Pell doesn't have any chance to get the new job.

If he does, then I'll probably go from areligious to anti.

Pell won't get it. As far as Catholic bishops go, he's a godless heathen (not that unexpected really, coming from Australia). JPII was a remarkably progressive Pope considering his conservative views. His views on contraception and abortion are in keeping with Biblical dogma, but he was also a pacifist and believed in forgiveness, and that's in keeping with the teachings of Christ also. It will be interesting to see what his successor is like.

I never really knew much about the Pope except that he was an old Polish guy who didn't like contraception, abortion or homosexual-types. He's grown on me the last few days the more I read about him, though. And he was the third-longest reigning Pope! That's quite an achievement.

It would be good if there was a cardinal who was 30-something, then we could have a hip young Pope. Either that, or someone who made Prince Phillip-style jokes all the time. That'd be funny.

Actually the next one is supposed to be from the Order of Benedict (also known as the Olivetans), and the anti-christ, known as Peter (Petrus Romanus) will follow. This belief is taken from the prophecies of St Malachy, in particular one where he wrote down the main characteristics of every pope from the time of his death until The End, and have been hotly contested for years. They were written around 1100ad, but weren't found until the 1600's, so many believe they were forgeries by monks. However, whoever wrote the document was fairly accurate. :)
