Actually, that scene is particurally interesting if you take into account the camera lens used as well as the mis en scene. It harkens back to the early works of Jackson Pollack, of course indicating that the character is in fact unsure of his sexuality. As for the lens, it creates and effect whereby one notices the surrounding more than they would with the typical. It's beautifully filmed, but not in sense more symbolic than conventional.
