Good idea? Bad idea? I picked up an ac30cc2 and really want to see how it sounds paired with my sl-x or even my 5150... Advice? Is it a dumb idea? I don't have an a-b-y yet, but plan on diy'ing one if it's worth the effort.

What style of music? What kind of tones?

I don't see why it'd be a bad idea unless you need the tight/heavy thing. I'm a giant Vox fan, having owned a handwired AC30 and a couple AC15's, and they're amazingly versatile amps.

Thrice's vhessiu and the super overdriven tone on beggars and major/minor... But I want to be able to dial it back... So I can have a dirty clean vox, then roll the volume knob and be pushing the ac30 pretty hard to get that full blown ac30 overdriven goodness, then add the Marshall for a super heavy addition to some parts.

not the biggest fan of the JCM900 SLX, some guys get good tones out of it, but the AC30 is fucking awesome!
Get yourself a Treble Booster, these things work really well with Vox amps imho, Bad Cat amps are based on
Vox, too afaik and Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) used them for a long time.

Just noticed this part. Unless you're cranking that AC30, you're not gonna get the full blown AC30 overdrive. They are fuckin loud amps!

Between the Vox and the Marshall you should have the Thrice tones nailed.

I agree that you can probably cover everything with just the AC30 (and maybe an overdrive). The Marshall is just icing on the cake.

I was reading that they used a Morgan 30/800 on Major/Minor (among other stuff I'm sure), which is basically an AC30/JCM800 hybrid. They've been using AC30s live for awhile now too.

didn't slash use the jcm900 slx alot before he got his signature model (the old one)?

like I said, not the biggest fan of the jcm900, but if you already own a 5150 you're
able to get decent sounds for almost every style with the jcm900 and the ac30, that
would be really cool.

I was actually trying to see if I could find some mods for the slx to make it not so.. fizzy. It was my first tube amp and I remember not being impressed by the tone, then playing a jcm800 and it ripped my face off. But I do know a properly set up and dailed in slx sounds amazing.
