Sabaton opening for Overkill in NYC

As much as I like Primal Fear, I hear they draw barely 100 people on any given night in the States.

That was my point to Pat (Nailz). Here in AZ Primal Fear had about maybe 30-40 people at their show. Redemption had even less. I don't believe Sabaton would do any better if they were headlining.

At this point, no, they would not.
I think some people fail to realize that the Prog Power community doesn't always translate to other cities.

I remember some people earlier in the year guaranteeing that Orphaned Land would sell out every night of their short headlining tour. No.

Even when they opened for Katatonia and Swallow the Sun, the shows did well, but were not instant sell outs.

You forget what an awful job Mosh Pit Army does promoting shows.

No argument there, but given the same promotion and venue to play I still don't think Sabaton could outdraw either at this point. After a tour or two in support of a decent headliner? Maybe.

I was genuinely wondering what information he was basing it on.

tl;dr shut up milton.

I thought you were being sarcastic, because you seem to be a bit exaggerated with Sabaton sometimes. I don't know, I think it's awesome they're touring, but they are clearly not big enough to headline a tour on their own (successfully) in the US yet (BTW FANBOYS, I SAID YET).

First, yes a joke. Second, Sabaton is doing some really impressive things in Europe right now, with not only selling out shows, but moving to bigger venues. In time, it's possible it could happen here to where they can headline 500 person venues.

It will happen. In time it will.

Some very interesting stats from last.fm.

http://www.last.fm/music/Accept
5,042,921 plays (274,849 listeners)

http://www.last.fm/music/Overkill
3,866,550 plays (153,732 listeners)

http://www.last.fm/music/Sabaton
11,773,805 plays (141,390 listeners)

Accept and Overkill have more listeners than Sabaton, but in terms of listener dedication, Sabaton is destroying them right now.

That's sort of what you expect for "old bands" vs. "new bands"; Accept and Overkill have gathered a bunch of people over the decades who own their albums, but don't listen to them all that much anymore. But I didn't expect the difference to be that stark.

Put another way, last week an average Overkill song was listened to ~300 times, an average Accept song was listened to ~500 times, and an average Sabaton song was listened to ~2000 times!

We will have to wait and see with this. In Europe is one thing, but the US is such a different beast. Let's be honest, US metal fans (a lot of them) tend to hate power metal. There are very few power metal bands that have good showings here. However, I will say that their style being a bit heavier has the possibility of being an outlier.

I guess time will tell if this leads to people coming out to these shows to see them.

I have to be honest. I have no clue what LAST.FM is, though I have certainly heard of it. Are these band authorized postings of songs, or do you listen to your own music on it? (IE - songs you upload to your personal player to track listenings, etc).

Sorry, this might seem like a stupid question, and that's fine.
I just have personally never used LAST.FM.

Not busting your balls Neil, but you keep referring to LAST.FM as a credible source of people's listening of bands. I am just curious how it works (IE - is it just that people have checked stuff out, or is it music that is listened to by customers who already purchased the music?)

Just a convenient site to keep track of your listening habits. I have a plugin for Foobar that sends a record to the site every time I listen to a song, whether or not I illegally downloaded it or ripped it from my own CDs. The site keeps totals of who you listen to, what song you listened to, and when you listened to it. Also has some other handy features.

I do find it shocking that the gap between Sabaton's numbers and Overkill's numbers is that large. Quite surprising IMO that it's not the other way around.

My best guess is that it's because Overkill's fans tend to be the old thrashers while Sabaton has the younger crowd. You can draw your own conclusions regarding the respective demographics' ability or willingness to mess around on a site like last.fm.

Yep. It's pretty obvious that Sabaton's fans probably trend younger and are more likely to be computer and internet-savvy.

if this is actually a tour....this is the perfect one for Sabaton. Thrash fans may like them for thier high power music. If they play their cards right and out on a sold show each night....they could end up being the highlight of the tour. Kind of like Eluviete on the first pagan fest tour.

This is what I'm thinking would happen, IF there were a medium-to-long tour. Sabaton will go over very well with an Overkill/Accept audience. Sure, we consider them power-metal, but it's ballsy power metal with a far smaller cheese quotient. :)
