I've recently realized that not only do I find shredding boring lately, but I also find it musically distasteful. If a very nice solo has a fast run or two in it, I'm still interested, but more often than not I feel I can actually hear what the guitarist was thinking when he wrote the solo, and it was probably something along the lines of, "Look how big my shred cock is...I can't wait for my friends to see this." I have to turn it off.

I still think Fooled By The Serpant by Communic is my favorite example of how to have a fast, but meaningful solo. Or Tristestaliana by Novembre.

I dunno, I still love shredding. Ambivalent...

Maybe it's the sweeping that annoys me because I really do like fast, melodic solos. Trieste Italiana is a good example of a nice solo, however.

Kinda off topic, it's funny you mention Trieste Italiana because Trieste is the capital city of the Friuli region where I live, and everyone wants to send it back to Slovenia. Everyone here says, "Oh yeah I love that song, aside from the fact that he says "Italiana"...TRIESTE SHOULDN'T BE IN ITALY!!!!!" I'm always like, "Relax mang! It's just a song!"

i liked it when loomis would shred so hard over an awesome backing riff/melody that the shredding almost became the backup to the awesome riff such as This Sacrament, or those Soilwork dudes on Machine Gun Majesty

Alot of Jeff Loomis' shredding is very tasteful (if that's the word) to me. It fits the feel of the song. It's definitely possible to write a good solo with the "look how big my shred cock is" in mind as long as it's good. 'Born' is a perfect example of that. But yeah, I don't like it when people do the same 16th/32nd notes forever to where it starts getting real old. But I'm not going to be this self righteous dick that's says "only slow Dave Gilmour solos" because I'm jealous of not being able to shred on guitar. I'd say Andy latimer from camel, dave gilmour and jeff loomis are some of the best lead guitar styles to put together.

I never really liked Loomis' shredding. Sure it was mighty impressive but it just never really did that much for me, aside from a nice solo here and there. His riffing was what I liked so much.

Honestly, I'll take Jerry Cantrell any day. Sounds silly, but that's just me. Them Bones is the perfect heavy rock/metal solo, imho...simple, tasteful, and effective.

well thats kinda what im sayin about loomis' shredding being more of an aesthetic sometimes rather than actually focusing on the notes and OMG HE SO GOOD because his solos also have tasteful awesome parts that are what you focus on, like the "children sitting in the trees, they turn to laugh at me" section on TGE he is shredding the fuck out of that part but it becomes just part of the riff/music to me, not really in any kind of hero/solo context.
