Some people can say Anthrax sold out when they got John and started writing more commercial style music. I mean listen to POT and SOWN and tell me which one is more "Metal". And this coming from a John fan. And SOWN is one of my favorite Anthrax albums. But musically for them to go back to Joey is actually going against the grain. But for them to take back Joey for the Money well yes its kind of a sellout but you have to look at it this way. There HUMAN BEINGS and need money to survive! Lets face it they havent sold much since SOWN and they have been playing small to medium clubs and have a hard time selling out those venues. Do I want to see John leave the band? HELL NO! But do I blame them for trying to make some money and get some exposure? No. Will will see in the next coming months. Will I be a fan if Joey comes back? Yes. Will I be a fan is John stays? Yes. Will I still be a fan when Anthrax calls it quits one day? Yes. Why? Because I'm a "fan" and I stick behind my band!

For me SOWN was the reason to turn my back on them as I thought: "Well, they have a new record label, this new singer whose voice is more accessible than the one of his precedessor, the new album produced by Dave Jerden who is known for producing alternative rock, they changed their music and even slightly their logo - I guess they are heading to a new direction and going the same way as Metallica or Megadeth." This may not have been very open-minded, but I was an 18-year-old into Death/Black/Grind back then.

Mmmm...I never heard that before. I do know that John wrote 30% of the lyrics for SOWN, so obviously a good portion of that record was written after John came aboard.

I've already made my stink about the sellout thing. personally, i like the step they made with SOWN and with john. i could be wrong, but i thought that the songs for SOWN were originally written for the band w/ joey in it. i thought i heard charlie say that in an interview.
I don't think that is correct.

As much as I love Anthrax's music, I think most of it is written in the studio as they record. I remember a Scott Ian video interview of him and he had short hair. It was taken during the recording/writing stages of SOWN. He was just talking about how much bush fits in and how it's affected the writing process.

What bothers me is that people are talking about the thing that Anthrax "gets"money from Sharon to play Ozzfest. Do you really believe that she needs Trax to run her Ozz thing, Trax is nothing in the States so Trax add nothing extra for her as a big crowd teaser/pleaser whatever you want to call it. I think it's a cool thing to put in a little Belladona for the 2005 festival tours and after that it's all back to Bush. maybe 1 or 2 new albums and we all see the end of Trax in a couple of years.

Actually I think SOWN was bit of "sellout" attempt but I don´t blame them at all. I mean lots of people said it was grunge just because of Dave Jerden, and vocals which sounded a little bit aliceinchainslike sometimes, but I think that´s BS.

yeah they conciously made a decision to change there sound, charlie said in an interview "he didnt want to end up being one of those bands"i can only assume he is talking about those legendarymosh riffs in belladonna days but u dont stay relevent if u dont move with the times,i really hated the production on sown, its a good record but all the doubling and and overlapping over the vocals and the shitty guitar sound scott had didnt do the record any justice.

plus its always hard for a new vocalist to find his feet in a new band, imagine if he gave the same delivery on sown as he did on wcfya...

Wow.
I'm really surprised to hear this much negativity about SOWN.

I thought that when they went from POT to SOWN, it was monumental jump in quality...all the way around. Vocals, music, production, the whole gig improved.

Ok here's how I justify my saying "sellout" in another thread.

1. The tour in '98 or whenever for the Return of the Killer A's that was SUPPOSED to be the dual frontman tour was being done as a "history lesson" of sorts. Cool for the fans, cool for the band. It didn't happen and I think we all know why($$$$$).
2. This supposed tour is being offered by the Devil incarnate and only b/c that represents the era they were popular in. If they did this it would by definition be selling out. Changing for the almighty dollar and or praise of the corporate music industry.

And by "corporate music industry" and "Devil inarnate" I mean Sharon Osbourne.

I think they are smarter than this. If they are destined to have a larger fanbase and a spot on Ozzfest then they should stick with what they have now..not jump on the nostalgia bandwagon.
