Should I give up on my PODxt?

For the past year or so I've been trying to get a good sound out of the thing but I have not been successful. I've tried Bulb's patches and all that but they never sound anything close to his tone. Everything I record has no punch at all and sounds 'atticy' no matter how much I wavelab it. It's stopping me from recording songs and making music. Am I missing something or should I just give up on it?

its a matter of personal taste. if its not your tone which is comming out of this thing, then its time to say goodbye! i had this choice too and i said goodbye. go get another amp and try something else. you will thats the price you pay.

I've tried a few impulses but they sound even worse IMO. Maybe I just don't know how to use them.

How much post processing do bands like Tesseract used? Because there's no way you can get that tone straight from a POD.

Strange I got pretty good tone right away on my first try with impulses, seemed pretty straight forward. Maybe you're trying to hard there.

Still I don't understand why pod people don't just get a 1x12 and plug their amp into it and record at neighbor friendly volumes. 1x12 at low volume with a decent head should sound better (and be much more fun) than pod.

I may sound like a pod basher but i LOVE my pod. I never record rhythm with it tho.

I just came across a similar problem with my zoom g9. it's was fun to jam along with and mess around with new effects and settings, but when it came to recording ANY kind of distorted guitar, it just didn't pay the piper.

I have found a secondary use for it though - an over glorified EQ pedal for post-guitar processing. Put that in the chain between guitar and amp (or guitar to DAW for impulses/rev3) and it's worked pretty well. Plus it's cleans are nice and give me a few changes when it comes that cleans and choruses.

As for you, if you just can't make it work, there's no shame in selling it and trying something new. Just don't get another pod-equal and find yourself in the same boat with a different name.

Because it doesn't work, since your head is not going to sound good at neighbour friendly volumes. If you drive it like half the way - doesn't matter what cab you use - it's going to be way too loud.

So one might say - use a power attenuator and then drive it through a cab - dunno how that is, I never tried it.

My way is to use a real amp and this little buddy:

ps: and no, don't get rid of the pod. it's great for funny little FX things that you may use every once in a while

Whenever I jam/practice with headphones through a POD, there's always some strange frequencies or something that keep me from using it more than around 10 minutes. My ears just get all fatigued and shit, even at low volumes. Sometimes it makes me wanna puke.

i tried bulb's patches as well and they sounded nothing like his tone on my gear...
Try some of the best patches out there and give them you own twist.. dial the knobs and just listen.

Or loan some EQ curves from guitar tones you like on certain albums, just look at them...

Or try impulses...

what is your setup?

Im in the same boat too with the POD Pro XT... I've decided it's time to say goodbye! I thought it was the greatest thing for such a long time but I'm never happy with the recorded tones as there are so many better options out there.

I'm getting ready to make a lil' iso cab for a guitar speaker to use for recording, but let's face it.....we're never happy with whatever we choose! I'm 35 and I've been through a ton of gear - it just keeps going and going. Nothing wrong with moving on, but sometimes it's nice to keep the old gang around for a bit to have some options when the shit hits the fan. I'm still waiting for my old valvestate head to knock on my door and say "I'm back fucker, miss me!?!"

I fucking HATE POD's. That said... I did record an EP with a POD XT a couple of years ago. The thing you have to remember about the XT, specifically, is that most people have found that the only way to get a decent sound out of the damn thing is to use the Tubescreamer Stompbox option in front of whatever your internal head and cab setup is. I also used an "off-axis" micing option and got rid of ALL the room sound, if I recall correctly. It came out very dry, but you can hear it on our Myspace page. Check out anything off of the "Sound The Alarm" EP... It's only dual-tracked too.

You guys are crazy I'm totally loving the pod xt pro with the metal pack. I got a couple of patches from some people on here and with each band i have to tweak them. Remember No two guitars or guitarist sound exactly the same. I had 2 guitarist and i used the same patch and it sounded completely different when recorded. Now if you go get a 5150 and mesa cab instead that does not mean instant great tone. It takes work guys...... Plus the pod is great for scratch guitars when the guitarist needs to play along with the drummer in the same room or whatever. So i say keep at least for that.

I have a pod x3... i fucking hate it. the design is just horrible - why didnt they build it into a simple metal casing? go for a good audio interface and use ampsims. it gives better sound quality and its easy to do post-processing on your recordings.

Try the original POD Pro, gives you much more of a solid sound I fiound, but I like the late 80's early 90's Morrisond Guitar tone and it's perfect for that.

I have both the XT Pro with Metal Pack and original POD Pro, and I must admit I find the XT Pro not as nice, the the top end of the eq spectrum is cool.

 Now Ive heard it all......

Sorry I just hate the old pod with a passion!!

Yeah, I don't like the 2.0's either... they sound cool and all, but they don't have half the options of an XT, let alone an X3. I just cannot imagine me playing a high-gain patch without the screamer stomp boosting the amp model.

I have the Metal Pack and I'm LOVING it! The big bottom is an AWESOME-sounding amp... I've come to find a good balance between djent and chug with it and so far so good! The Criminal and Diamondplate models are also VERY useable!

If you're not digging the POD but still want the convenience of amp sim, definitely try ReValver!

yeah pod sucks. you can get like 70% of the way there with it to a good sounding tone but theres always something funny about the upper mids area that sounds fake... to me atleast

NNaaa, I've got some great tones out of the original POD, very beefy tones too. I'll grant the options on the XT are vast, but I do prefer the amp models on the older one, plus the XT really needs the Metal Pack if you wanna get some classy stuff out of it.

What high-gain models are there in the 2.0? I only remember a Marshall JCM and a Dual Recto... Insane too? One a side note, IMO, the Insane model is one of the worst models on any Line 6 device.

The POD xt's L6 Treadplate (based on the 2.0's dual recto tone) is quite nice... kinda fizzy, tho. The Treadplate Dual is cool too if you don't want to spend on the Metal Shop pack, but yeah, the MS pack is a BIG advantage on high-gain vs. a stock POD xt.
