*EDIT - supposed to say 'or' UK band*

My mate Craig from Viatrophy (RIP) has just done this video showcasing some of his drum skills (one foot blasting n that).
His link's in the video.
I recorded the audio for this vid and as requested there's no editing.

Haven't recorded real drums in aaaages. Was pretty fun. Only had 8 inputs to work with.
I sent him a rough mix of just the drum after mixing it in 5 mins and he just made the video straight away before I could tweak anything. Pretty raw but is fine for the vid.

Just goes to show you can still get a killer drum mix with 3 mics used right. That ride sounds awesome, really clear! Is the kick all natural or some sample in there?

He just has a really awesome sounding kit that was tuned well...despite the really old heads.
Toms were all 57s, snare was a Beta 57, Beta 52 on the kick but its blended with one of my own kick samples, overheads were AKG C1000s and the hats/bell was another 57.
Just ran straight into my MOTU 8 mic pre.
Just recorded on Cubase 4, I only have the standard Cubase plugins. Just the usual EQ and compression really. Standard Cubase 3 reverbs etc.

i actually got the use Craig's kit in Amersham two years ago, its absolutely killer. He's such a good drummer and Viatrophy were such a good band, shame to see them go, Reading lose another great band :(

I'll be seeing you guys tomorrow night Josh :headbang:

What do you generally do as far as processing for drums?

Pretty basic from what I remember. I EQ the snare a bit on a 10 band EQ before the compressor to enhance or cut frequencies then the compressor was like 6:10, kinda bog standard snare settings I got off the forum. Sometimes with the snare I'll cut some of the low end out only to put it back in after the compressor so it's not compressing the bleed from the kick etc. I do similar stuff with hi end on vocals because there's no built in deesser in Cubase 4, compress it then add a bit more of it later. Not the best solution but I'm broke and don't like using cracks.

Toms are literally just EQ'd. Kick is blended with a sample and a bit of EQ. OHs are EQ'd, removing some low end and some 250, compressed, then EQ'd again. A different room reverb on the OH's and hats.

That's pretty much it.

...that and I squashed the master with T-racks, sent it to Craig and he just put the guitars back over it at the end.

Cheers, thanks for the info.
