September of 2004. I bought Odyssey because I liked the cover. I did not like Russ' voice but I enjoyed the instrumentals a lot. Once I let Accolade II continue to play when Russ started to sing and when he sang "You were my strength, how can I go on ," my thoughts on his voice took a complete 180 and I instantly got hooked on SX, and have been ever since.

I had never listened to metal before symphony x. I had Metallica's post-AJfA albums and I thought those were among the best. After Symphony X, i started to listen to a lot more true metal, prog rock, prog metal, and classic rock. So I guess I am still relatively new to the whole metal genre. I never participate in musician discussions because I still don't know who most of the people are :p

The song that first got me interested was out of the ashes. I can't remember when that was...about 2001 or 2002. I'll go for 2001, but I think the first album I listened to extensively was V in 2002, or something. Was V even out in 2002?

I first heard them in 2004 with The Odyssey--but it was when I heard V later that year that I was hooked.

2003: The Odyssey

Had already heard King of Terrors and The Haunting,
so I was given The Odyssey on my birthday.
I was almost scared off by the 'right-into-your-face'-sound of Inferno,
but later on :headbang:

I think this poll makes more sense when you look at when the albums came out...its really apparent that SymX's popularity picked up after V was released, and even moreso with The Odyssey than any of their other albums.

1995: Around the end of the year; my friend who used to work at WSOU in South Orange, NJ sent me a tape of The Damnation Game; I was just so fucking floored after hearing "the Edge Of Forever" and the rest that I wanted more.
Since their really wasn't(and my friend left and I went away to college), I didn't really discover them again until I became internet savvy in the late nineties and boy was I happy and amazed at the musical strength of their catalog.

Ironically, I didn't see them live until March 2, 2001 at L'Amours(on the V tour).
Inarguably, the most indellibly insane and fortuitous night of my life.........

I think it was around 94-95, I was told about this KILLER cd called DWOT, and when I went to Impulse Music, all they had was TDG, bought it, slapped it into the truck cd player, and freaked out just how fucking cool this band was. Got on the net late in 95 or so, joined TEoF, and have been a fan ever since.....

around 2003 I was surfing through a music forum and someone recommended that I check out Symphony X. Although I know a lot of you think it's wrong, but if it wasn't for free music downloading, I probably wouldn't be a symphony x fan, buying every sx cd, right now. So yeah, I downloaded "pharoah," and at first the tone hurt my ears so I didn't really like that, but after a few listens the song grew on me and I burned it onto a cd to bump it in my car. After that I asked people what other good songs they had and downloaded "Eyes of medusa" and "Sea of Lies," and that's when I really appreciated Symphony X. Around september, I had downloaded a couple songs off Odyssey, and was immediately influenced to go out and buy the album, and so I did, and it was HISTORY!

Since September 2003, I have bought every single SX album, including the live one, and Pinnella's solo album (still need to get Russell and Romeo's cd), and two SX shirts. And I am about to go see SX for the FIRST TIME as my FIRST ever metal concert or real concert if that makes sense, at Gigantour!

Summer of 2002, I had recently just gotten in to Dream Theater, and after browsing around on Amazon, SymX was recommended. I checked out the sample of Communion and the Oracle, and the rest is history.
