the year was 1999, and one of my Magic: The Gathering(yeah, I used to play that game) cronies put on "Of Sins and Shadows" before sitting down for the umpteenth chaos game played that evening. I was floored.
around 2004 I picked up the Odyssey on a very good review from my musical friend... I wasn't into Metal of any kind at the time, I was listening to Linkin Park and Chris De Burgh (Linkin Park Cd's where now donated to my younger bro, andf well Chris De Burgh I still love) My friend sent me 'Awakenings' through MSn where I listened to it for like so long, and he also sent me the intro to Inferno... A month or 2 l8ter of listening to the same song I purchased Special Edition of The ODyssey with Masquerade '98 on it! From there everything fell into place, my next symphony X purcchase was DWOT, DG, TiO, V... And well just recently I purchaased Self-Titled

2004. I was looking for a prog metal band because I really liked Dream Theater and I heard Symphony X were really good. I heard Egypt and loved it and eventually bought The Odyssey in April 2004.
In 2000 I was trying to find some new music to listen to. I noticed that V has JUST came out and was selling well and was recommended to me by the CDNOW recommendation system. So I bought it. Rest is history.
Edit: I bought SO MUCH MUSIC because of CDNOW and the still-running AudioGalaxy. People say all this stuff about piracy, but I never bought as much music as I did back when you could still download songs easily.
