Slipknot - Iowa tone question

"Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat." was the first one.. not that it matters, but i used to be a huge Slipknot fan back in the day. :)

Jim root has always been a Orange guy, Mick as far as I know (and my friends brother was the drum tech for joey back in those days, Mick bounced between rivera and mesa mainly recording with rivera, and the conan show was most likely rented gear for the show only

I read that they use Bogner Überschalls for rehearsal and recording and don´t take them on tour because they are too precious for touring.
 
I was a huge fanboy (i still love them despite me growing up and being tired with the cheesy costumes/stage antics and stuff) back then, and i remember a guitar world interview during/about the Iowa recording, with Mick stating that the Iowa tone was guitar plugged straight into a VHT Pitbull Ultra Lead. On this album Mick's and James' tone sound a little different, not sure if it's the guitar or something else (cab ? mics ? clean boost tone control ?).

On the Conan O Brien show when they played the Heretic Anthem, it looks like James was using his old days Mesa DC-4 (not exactly sure about the model (number) sorry) on Mesa Cabs, and Mick on his Marshall JMP1 preamp (i remember he was plugging it into a Mesa Boogie Simulclass poweramp back then) on the Carvin cabs.

I think that was the most crushing live TV performance ever seen. And the other TV appearances they've done were quite badass also.

Fuck i wanna listen back to this album and i feel you about the "lifeless" feel of the drums tone on All Hope Is Gone (they have the same drums sound live also nowadays). The drums on Iowa were amazing, and the drumming was sick. Skin Ticket intro anyone ?

I've always loved the guitar tone on their albums (which was different every time). Sounds dual tracked every time, very "live". Plus they have sick riffs. Those guys are among my favourite guitar players (after Dimebag / Andreas Kisser / Sob Merauder / Mitts Madball RagMen / Stephen Carpenter / the Glassjaw guys / Ernie C Body Count / the Downset guys / the E Town Concrete guy / etc).
 
The Bogner that everyone thinks is an Überschall...it's not...I talked to Jim's guitar tech, and he said that Jim wanted a very original sound, so he went to Bogner personally, and the guy gave him a one-of-a-kind amp. Said amp was used to fatten up a lot of the tracks. I think the rest might be Rivera and VHTs...No Orange was used AT ALL on Iowa.

Oh, man, the vibe of this f'kn album just smashes babies into a wall like that... sorry all you fathers around here for the foul imagery lol, I love the little critters.

It reminds me of Master's debut album, only glossier and refined.

Gonna second the VHT remark. And I wouldn't dare doubt it because SO MANY (mainstreamish) metal and rock bands used VHT in the late 90's/early 2000's. Pitbulls could be heard on albums by Mudvayne, Disturbed, Breaking Benjamin (I think), and I DO recall hearing Mick talk about it.
 
Also being a huge slipknot fanboy back in the day, I can shed light on the info:

Along with the other comments, I'm going to have to go with the VHT Pitbull as well. Not sure about the cab or mic combination.
Jim only started using Orange sometime after 2006 I believe. When Stonesour released Come What Ever May he started playing Orange then and by the time Slipknot did All hope is gone he was using Orange in the studio.
Before both were using Rivera Knuckleheads for the longest time. Not sure about the tone on the albums though.
Mick still using Rivera from what I know.
 
Fuck yeah I used to be a huge slipknot fanboy, IOWA has a bitchin tone, every now and then when i drive long distances and when i find myself falling asleep, i load up people = shit or heretic anthem and fuck, that shit pumps me up. I've been keeping my eye on this thread for a while, it doesn't seem like anyone 100% knows what equipment was used. Some feel that they know only to be differed by someone else.
