Hi

I'm listening "Fiction" by Dark Tranquillity, an album I particularly like music and production wise, and the snare on this record sounds really good imo. It's a very specific tone. It has a high pitched tone that I'd like to get on my next projects.

I was wondering if this is a piccolo snare or a simply high tuned medium snare. Do you guys usually work with piccolo snares to get a beautiful snap and a tone that can be more easily perceived in a dense mix?

Many albums mixed by Tue Madsen have this lovely dirty guitar sound. After several tests I noticed that a good tape sim like MPX can give this saturated grainy touch in my guitar tracks by pushing the flux button relatively high (250 or more). It may sounds unpleasant to some but I really dig this and it helps a lot to give a good wideness.

Is it a usual way to mix distortion guitars or am I totally wrong??

Don't know about Fiction but here is a video of the drum tracking for ''We are the void''. At around 1:16 you can see his full drum set.
